Whay you are calling the spindle isn't what is considered the spindle. It is ridiculous that you can buy complete axle assemblies for such a cheap amount but as always buyer beware as the cheap axle assemblies don't meet the same standards as the OE ones do.

when I worked on military computer systems..

we had a few power supplies.. easy to fix.. and only take an hour or so..

but.. the part that went in them was $1,500 when ordering the whole power supply form depot was only $200..

Boss used to get mad when I would order the whole thing. instead of fixing it..

$50 sounds way cheep for CV joints!!!

it was actually $76 at advance auto but i bought it online and used a discount code and got $25 off and picked it up in the store an hour later

Travis,

I suspect the $50 axle assembly is probably a remanufactured unit. They by the parts wholesale and rebuild them very cheaply...and often in other countries where labor is cheap. The local price is probably after exchanging your old axle.

Most axle joint failures are at the outer CV Joint, so the cheap rebulder may simply put fresh grease and a new boot on the inside CV Joint, and replace the bearings, grease and put a new boot on the outer CV Joint. It probably only cost them and average of about $20 to rebuild an axle.

There was a local shop (closed now) that offered to replace the front axles on my old 1990 Honda Accord for $110 per side (including labor). I did not do that since I only needed to replace a torn boot....I replace the boot myself, but afterwards, I thought it would have been worth the $110 to have them just replace the axle....regreasing and replacing the boots is a messy job and why they just wanted to replace the axle rather than the $10 boot and $100 for labor?

Not commenting on the quality of the parts but if you take a $30,000 car and try to build it from parts it will cost 100k plus!

The typical CV axle failure is in the joint and caused by a torn or damaged boot. The shafts and splines are rarely damaged in standard driving. It is a fairly routine job to rebuild the joints on a bench top, even easier when done in an assembly line fashion.
