The attached article has a disturbing story. I find it odd that a company can unilaterally disrupt a large portion of the global internet without repercussions from the Federal government. If a hacker or terrorist did this, the FBI would be busting down the doors and arresting people.

This doesn't surprise me. Cogent is very controversial among network providers. They offer low quality bandwidth with prices to match, and some data centers specifically advertise themselves as "Non-Cogent".

The Internet is largely made up of private networks. The quality and robustness of the networks that make up the Internet have everything to do with it NOT being federally controlled.

If people weren't addicted to the internet then their wouldnt be a problem. What did we all do before the internet? The net goes down or slows down and you have to use a phone or god forbid physically write a letter.......oh no msn is down, I have to read the newspaper......

I'm not trying to offend anybody because I am an addict too. I am just trying to make a point.

If the internet goes down my business goes down, period! I can't pull orders from the shopping cart nor can I even pull up the tracking info. I'm addicted because my lively hood depends on it.

Thanks,

SST

I'm sure this is impacting the operation of the Federal government as well, since they do business with thousands of vendors on a daily basis. :(

i understand it is some peoples livelyhood but what did u do before the net? There was life before the internet, that is all I am saying......

Dave,

I work for someone else and I am extremely wealthy. I have a good paying job that allows me to take vacations, buy anything I want, and spend time with my friends and family.

You can't get any richer then that, even if you work for yourself.

It works because before the private companies got involved a set of standards was created for all the equipment and the protocol that was to be used - and those companies had to meet those standards in order to get onto the net to begin with.

The standards were set by the Government (Military) and, later, one private company that made routers (Cisco).

If you want to see what private companies usually do, check out the mess Toshiba and Sony are making of the High Definition DVD format by starting a stupid format war.
