For anyone considering purchasing an iPod Classic, here is a bit of information that Apple did not include in its introduction the other day. It is very likely that any video equipment (laptop players, etc) will not work with the Classic.

To send video to an external device on the previous iPods, all you had to do was go to the settings and turn the TV Out setting to "On". On the new iPod Classic (and I think the iTouch), this setting is locked. Apparently Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make these require an authentication chip in the video player, which will automatically unlock this feature.

Bottom line, any 3rd party video equipment that you used with an earlier iPod Video will not work with an iPod Classic. Of course, Apple's accessories already have this chip.

That is either a dumb mistake, or a dumb ploy to get people to buy their accessories. Didn't work for me though -- I'm returning the iPod Classic.

Just wanted to give a warning to anyone who might be considering getting the iPod Classic. If you check Apple's message boards, you will find lots of discussion on this topic.
