My wife is complaining about the brakes om my ST and I am thinking about taking it in this coming weekend to get it done. Is this a good deal on brakes.

it seems pretty resonable for what they are doing, just check around first and see what other places offer for the same stuff.

With brakes you want to have the job done the best it can. I wouldnt try and save $40-$50 and go to a place that you dont have experience with or was not recomended by someone how has used them before.

You have a 4x4 so there are no bearings to pack. You definately do not want OEM pads, they are way over priced and not that good. There is no reason to replace calipers if there is nothing wrong with them, especially with remanufactured ones. They should bleed no matter what and depending on how many miles you have replace the brake fluid.

Cutting the rotors is not always the best thing to do these days. Ford uses crap rotors in the first place and you will be lucky to be able to cut them once and still be within specs. If they do it themselves then tell them to just break the surface and not take too much off (as long as there is no deep grooves). If they are warped, which they probably are, then they may not have enough of material to actually streighten them out and stay in specs.

Checking and Adjusting the rear brakes should always be part of any brake job. Thats they way I do, better safe than sorry. A complete job yeilds much better results, no surprises down the road. When someone asked me questions I always had the answers because I always checked before I tole them the job was done.

I like semi-metallic pads, thats just me. I'm sure many people get good results with ceramics. I use Wagner Thermo Quiet pads (check my brake job project). Yes they are a little on the dusty side but stopping and no noise is much more important to me then dirty rims.

I also dont go to the "discount" type places for anything. Like jiffy-lube or the car washes that have service bays also. From my experience in NYC those places are 3rd rate shops and cause more problems then they are worth. I have had to RE-fix some of their "work" on many occasions. Dont know where you are from, maybe they are better in your area.

In my mind there are 2 brake jobs: One is just maintaining your brakes before something goes wrong and the other is fixing a problem that arose. Both include a test drive, bleeding and a rear brake check/adjust. How can you charge extra for things that you should be doing anyway?

Good Luck. :)

Going to check a couple more places Monday for prices. I have delt with them before. That is were I take my ST in for oil changes and to get my alignment done. They are good with working you in with no appointment and never had any problems with them. Thanks for all the info.

If they have a good brake mechanic, the $289 is a good deal compared to prices, in my part of Texas..They should do a complete brake flush though.

I agree with everything JohnnyB said except I would change the calipers. I always replace the calipers with remanufacture units from places like NAPA, AutoZone, but I always do my own brake work. You can get calipers with 50K mile to Lifetime warranties and they vary in price from $20-$50 in most cases. That's cheap insurance that your brake job is going to last.

I would have all four brakes bled. Brake fluid should be flushed with every brake job or every 2-3 years ( about as long as a set of brake pads last for most people).
