I found a shop that'll sandblast my rusty Gen 1 running boards for only $20. Just gotta take them off and haul them the mile to the shop. Yippy skippy!

Then I'll paint them with semi-gloss black Rust Bullet, then Rust-Oleum #7754 Anodized Bronze spray paint, which is a match for Gen 1 running boards.

Mark 2 things

1) hopefully the rust is NOT rot and holes don't open up

2) i would use a better paint then rustoleum as a base primer...

I would use an encapsulate rust preventing paint like a Por-15..... Spray cans just don't hold up to UV and road abuse like the better paints do...

Rust Bullet is an encapsulate. I can tell you from personal experience (restoring aircooled VWs) Rust Bullet is much much better than Por-15. I haven't had the chance to use the new Rust bullet BlackShell but the Automotive Formula which is silver works EXCELLENT!

+1 On Gavin's suggestion.

If done right, rust and corrosion would be unlikely to occur again.

Ever tried to chip powder coating? Very difficult to do.

I am actually working on the same exact project, though the local shop is going to charge me $30 for sandblasting! I might use Mark's price to negotiate...haha

Any who - here is a picture of my step bars...

I'm not really sure if these things are even salvageable. I want to try though, because I really don't want to pay $200-$300 for new ones. I would rather use that money on other additions.

Any clever ways to fill in these rust spots?

This website I am linking describes how to treat the rust spots to prevent them from becoming worse, however I don't want to paint over it without smoothing it out. Is there any kind of epoxy that might would work? Someone mentioned a J-B Stik (by J-B Weld)... has anyone tried this?

Rusty- As you probably know, rust and corrosion occurs on the inside.

If you paint or finish them, the stains will tranfer through very fast.

Look on CL, Ebay, or post a WTB on the S & S Board for used ones.

Many ST owners have removed theirs. Shipping may be expensive, though.
