Which one do you think is better? Looks like the KKM kit just replaces the air box with am open filter and larger MAF housing. The K&N unit replaces the entire intake system. I'm guessing it has the highest gains. My last K&N one has a whistle and it fell off often. The k&n looks more flow optimized. However, I always felt that the biggest issue with the oem intake was the box. I also like the k&n heat shield.

Your thoughts?

Hey Carey, I like the K&N series 57 intake kit. I've had no problems or whistles. Only the filter rubbing on one of the wiring harnesses and causing a short. Bob

From the link that you supplied, I couldn't see much of the KKTRUE-REV part, aside from a metal part that looks suspiciously like a c. 2000 Mustang-style MAF housing, and a small one at that! The problem is that the '07+ Sport Trac doesn't use a stand-alone, pass-through MAF assembly! I also see a bellows-style connector that is usually where aftermarket intake products get their power gains. What I don't see is any separator to keep the intake charge cool, and hot engine bay air out.

In contrast, the K&N FIPK uses a precision molded plenum that's designed by computer and dyno tested and certified to make gains (or your money back). The FIPK uses the existing MAF probe, and devote a great deal of the instructions to mounting the probe properly. All FIPK connectors are flush fit to keep airflow "clean". The FIPK uses a much larger filter element, and gasketed metal heat shielding to keep the intake in cold air. It's not a completely sealed unit like the stock filter box, but OTOH that means that the FIPK can pull in more unrestricted air.

Frankly the photo of the KKTRUE-REV part looks like like the wrong photo at first glance. But after seeing all of the Explorer parts, it becomes clear that all you're getting is a shiny metal place to put the MAF probe. So what?

It would be a different story if they had flow bench numbers that might have shown that the stock intake plenum flowed well enough, like C&L did with the original 2V manifold (http://www.cnlperformance.com/plenum03.html) to show that their their "elbow" plenum made real gains. But KKTRUE-REV has no data to show. They have all of their eggs in an expensive machined aluminum MAF mount, but can't explain why it might help. No thanks!

It really bothers when an aftermarket part has no dyno proven, stand alone gains. If KKM had a dyno sheet PDF that showed 8 or more HP, it would make it a better bang for the buck than even the K&N.

I was looking at the K&N 57 and 63 series and it appears that they added some tube supports that didn't come on the 63 series that I had installed on my 08 Adrenalin. So the new product shouldn't fall off like the old one did.

My next concern is the whistle that I had to endure with the K&N. That was extremely annoying.

Then there was the constant plastering of my MAF with filter particulate and oil. That caused countless check engine lights.

Out of about 5 K&N FIPK units I've owned, that was the first one to cause problems.

Maybe I could give them another chance.

The KKM is the SAME size as the OEM MAF....... I bored 1 larger and got a CEL on a stock truck with my tb... Too much air......

You will need a Xcal to fix and adjust...

AND I dont like Kurt..... He burnt me bad while trying to sell his products,,,, SO he gets NONE of my $$ ever !!

I'm going to be so pissed if I decide to buy an intake and get the same pain the ass issues that I had with the last one.

So Todd, You would recommend a k&n over the KKM? I think that is the direction I'm leaning, if I decide to do one again.

Todd, what mods have you done to you 10 STA thus far?

Cary,

What was the issues you had ???

I Have the Noc intake, exhaust, modded air box, TB, Testing ignition coils. Thats the performance so far... The rest are cosmetic mods.

As for the intake, Its your call, all depends what you want.....

The issues I had were (found in above posts):

Oil and filter particulate plastering the MAF causing CELs

Intake falling off the Zabteck TB because there was no bracing under the intake.

A whistle on cold days.
