Aloha,

I have a Dell laptop with two 512mb memory sticks. I want more to process videos faster. I have seen advertised, 2 1g sticks or 1 2g stick for the same price! Does it matter to the computer weather I replace both 512s with 1g and have 2g of memory. Or replace 1 512 with a 2g and have 2.5g memory.

Thanks and God bless

Ed,

It depends upon which model Dell laptop you have. Some cannot hand the larger chips, but most will handle up to 1GB chips and you have two memory slots. Again, depending upon the specific model, the two memory chips may fit in through a cover on the bottom, or some will have one memory slot in the bottom and one under the keyboard.

If you do not know how to get at the memory slot under the keyboard, let me know and I will tell you the typical method to remove a Dell keyboard. it's really pretty easy

Go to Crucial.com, download their scanner, then run it. It'll scan your system and tell you exactly what memory you currently have, then recommend upgrades. You can either buy directly from them or take that info and buy it elsewhere.

Rich, I have had the keyboard off to blow it out with compressed air. That is easy. System properties says that there is 1G ram. I have a Latitude 620. I will ask Google if a 620 will accept 2.5G ram. I was unsure if both memory cards had to be equal. Maybe also look at Crucial.com, thanks Train Track. Ed

Agree with Train, Thats the only and best way to fly !!!

Ed,

Yep, Lattitude D620's will take 2 GB's of RAM, and no, they do not have to match, but computers will use memory more efficiently if all the memory is the same size and speed.

If I recall (i retired in July) that D620's and D630's have one memory slot under the keyboard.,,,but that's pretty easy to check by just opening the cover on the bottom. If it has only one slot, the other is under the keyboard..

The Lattitude D620's and D630's are pretty good laptops...We bought a lot of them where I worked. I would not say I was impressed with the D600 or the pittiful D505's They were junk.

About a year before I retired I go a new Lattitude E6500 with all the bells and whistles (like light up keyboard, ambient light sensors, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD,etc ..Great laptop, but I had to give it back when I retired.

Thanks guys,

I went to crucial and they also said I could use 4G. I have had trouble purchasing from them though. I have not gotten a purchase receipt. So I am nor sure if I bought from them or not. I did put in my credit card # so I must wait before going elsewhere. But I do know what to buy, thanks.

God bless Ed
