Let's make an FAQ out of this one too

According to Rich Stern:

I have no objection to expanding the FAQ, provided that the content comes to me in refined form. In the past, I have received incomplete or only partially correct suggested info for the FAQ, and then it becomes MY project to finish. Can't do that. So, if you want an FAQ entry added, write it up, ask for some feedback here from others on whether they agree with the info, and then email it to me and I will publish it.

So let's make a completed FAQ on maximum tire size on stock wheels in "refined form" using the information below. Then I will submit it to Rich Stern.

Tire size upgrade by J-S, 9/13/2006 07:18 PT

Category - Wheels and Tires

Can someone tell me what would be the biggest tires I could fit on my 01 ST without a lift ? And does this affect my computer, ABS, airbags, or any other parts in a negative way? Thanks

265/70-16. Won't affect anything.

My dog is faster than your dog.

I don't know the max size but your speedometer and odometer will read incorrectly. Extreme size upgrade may affect the ABS as to when they kick in. The Drive shaft angle will be more severe and may cause early u-joint wear. Do a search and you will find this topic has been brought up several times before.

Not lifting the truck will not affect the driveshaft angle. 265/70 is not much bigger than stock and won't affect the speedo noticeably.

Mine came with the smaller 235/70-16's so with the 32" tires I just allow that the speedo is reading 5 mph slower than actual. No tickets yet.

My dog is faster than your dog.

What do you need to do if you have upgraded to say 17s? What does the speedo need to be adjusted?

re: Tire size upgrade by STanner,9/13/2006 08:28 PT

My 265/75/16 actually made my speedo right on the money... Slight rub lock to lock, left rear wheelwell, which is self clearancing. The 265's are 30.5" tall, and that dimension can vary from tire to tire, mfg to mfg... pics in lib... HTH

The speedo only needs to be adjusted if the tire diameter changes. The rim diameter doesn't matter. If you bump up to 17's but still keep a roughly 30" diameter tire, your speedo won't change.

Superlift makes a module you can plug in to adjust for that. An XCal2 from Wayne will do that too but I see that people are having delivery issues.

My dog is faster than your dog.

Im plain out lost!!! What up with the "My dog is faster than your dog", i mean i would understand if it would be "my sport trac is faster than your sport trac". The websites name speaks for it self

Here's how I feel it might look:

Does that look refined enough to submit to Rich Stern to Add to the FAQ's?

I would probably just go with the basic:

"265/70r16" and maybe add: "with a chance of minor rubbing on the plastic in the rear and on the sawybar in the front during hard turning"

To me the rest is just extra stuff. Just me, but the simpler the better.;)

How is this?

Biggest tires that fit on ST without a lift?

265/70-16 - Possible chance of slight rub lock to lock. The 265's are 30.5" tall, and that dimension can vary from tire to tire, mfg to mfg. Do a site search and you will find more on this topic.

R&G, That to me seems better. I was worried that with all that other info you would still have people asking the same question, even after reading the FAQ. You last post is short and to the point. Nice.;)

But, then "JohnnyO" hasn't met our dog (border collie mix) who is the fastest dog at the dog park.

[OT]I have a retired racing greyhound. Greyhounds are the second fastest land animal after a cheetah and a race hound will go 0-45 mph in about five strides. My dog had 119 career races and placed or won in 44 of them. What kind of dog do you have again? [/OT]
