I'm looking at a '99 Explorer for my wife and wanted to know if theirs any thing I should check for with problems on this vehicle other then the normal stuff?

I have a lifted '03 Sport Trac and would love to get her a Sport Trac too but finances aren't allowing that right now. What if anything does the '99 Ex have issues with that I should watch out for?

I'm not familiar with that year Explorer, but my parents had a '96 Explorer new and never had any problems out of it and traded it with about that many miles. I know that's not very useful information, but I think that's probably a pretty good buy at that price, especially since he said he's not firm on the price.

You know where to find the Explorer geniuses.

Just ask him to let you have it inspected by a mechanic. Any issues you could find probably could still make it worth your purchase, but you'll know where to start with making it more reliable and you'll have a way to knock of a few more dollars.

My brother had a 1999 Explorer XLS 4X4 OHV V6. Very reliable vehicle. No tranny issues at all. Drove it for about 6 years and sold it for 1 grand less than he got it for. As far as I know it is still on the road.

My ex-brother-in-law has/had a 1998 Explorer XLS 4x4 OHV V6. He beat the crap out of it. they got it off eBay in Hartford, CT. Very reliable. I am the family mechanic. Before my sister kicked him out, the last time I checked the odometer, it had 190,000+ miles on it, but it was beat up pretty bad.

My brother has a 2001 Explorer Eddie Bauer AWD V8 with 130,000 or 140,000 miles. Runs great, but my Trac is faster than that V8. Anyways, he has had it for over a year and has had no issues so far.

We have a 2000 Explorer XLT 4X4 SOHC V6. We got it used with 132,000 miles on it. I had a manifold leak and the tranny was shot. Total investment, including the tranny repair, was around $5,000 Shortly after we got it, the belt tensioner exploded. 20 bucks later and we were back on the road. We went through one set of tires and are on the second set. Other repairs...

Wheel bearings

upper and lower balljoints

tie rod ends

throttle position sensor

waterpump and hoses

belt

rear glass due to broken defroster tabs

most recently, U-Joints.

Mileage at the moment? 211,000 miles. We drove it to Florida in December at 206,000 miles. Didn't think twice about it and once I change the oil and go over it after this nasty winter, I would drive it to California without even thinking twice.

Thanks guys, I went and checked it out and the guy never showed. Checked out the truck and saw it needed new tires, complete inner and outer rocker, rear wheelwells, complete exhaust, both tail lights were broken, brakes, rotors, etc...... Can you say P.O.S..

:toilet:

Needless to say this thing wasn't worth it. I found a couple other Explorers so I'll keep trying.

My sister had a '99 ex xlt. Had 140K miles on it. Just general maintanance. Never had any problems.

She would most likely still have it, but. Her husband ran a light and got T-boned.
