In two weeks my son is starting his first year at UCONN.I'm looking to buy a LCD TV for his dorm.I'm looking at 19 inch models .He has a laptop so he doesn't need it as a moniter.I don't want to buy just price.I want to try to find a happy medium between price and reliability. Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, markr

I needed a light television for my bedroom dresser (the set is antique, and I wanted something that would not stress the wood). I did not want anything overly fancy or expensive, but rather, something to watch a little TV in the mornings before class or at night before sleep.

I purchased this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7237091&type=product&id=1115364338594.

I was not sure about Westinghouse quality, but it has been nothing short of fantastic. The picture is comparable to the other units I checked (though it is somewhat 'dimmer' than HD widescreen LCDs). It is very light and all connections are easily accessed. The remote is comparable to any other TV remote. The sound is not too great, but it is not bad, either. If you want great sound, you need to go with an external audio setup - something unnecessary for a bedroom.

BestBuy is selling it for $300. However, I purchased mine from the "Bon-Ton", a department store chain. They had it on sale for about $220.

Good luck with your search.

It's too late for you, but for others in your situation I suggest NOT buying that freshman a laptop. Save the money and instead by a more reliable, lower cost, more horsepower desktop. With the money saved you can easily buy a 19" LCD monitor and TV tuner card, and the average student has everything they need for their dorm room.

Sure, I know laptops are all the rage, what with portability and such, but most folks have PCs at home the kids can use for the occasional paper or net research while home, and a USB thumb drive keeps college and home in synch. Sure, trips to the library for studying might be easier with a laptop, but a majority of the time the studying should be from a book.

Still, there are some schools that require laptops, and if your students is one, never mind...

TJR,

Your point is well taken.I struggled with the laptop or desktop debate untill my inlaws said they would pay for what he wanted.I learned that It is best to let them do as they would like to do (within reason). Our younger son will get the desktop our older one was using so that will not go unused.

AdamCKach,

The Westinghouse is one I am considering.

Viewsonic and Syntax Olevia make great 20" lcd screens for cheap. I don't know your budget but you can usually get these for $350 or lower. These are basic, non-HD which are perfect for a dorm but if you are looking for something for him to use after college you might want to spend a little more. You can also get a 26" for about $470, which is HD ready. :p

This could be an option as well, a tuner card for the laptop, then you don't have to worry about a seperate piece of equipment and the cost of it._ Ron

I have a 26" Olevia theat George C mentioned. Love it. Bought it for the bedroom last christmas, after rebates it was about $400. I would expect a good price on the 19" model.

We've had an Insignia TV in our bedroom for over a year now. Not bad picture and very inexpensive. Insignia is a Best Buy brand and you can get a 20" for $99.99.

For the Quality vs. Cost, I think it's a good deal and would buy again for a small room (bedroom) TV.

I'd go with Blackhat's option. It turns a latop into an entertainment center. I lived in dorms when I was stationed in Korea a few years ago, and I can tell you from experience that those rooms fill up fast. Anything you can do to make additional space will make your son's room less cluttered and give him more room for studying and relaxing.
