hello all, I am looking to buy a new car for b-day. I have wanted a sport trac since the first time I saw one. I loved the idea of having a truck and still being able to haul around three kids comfortably yet not taking up the whole road in the processes. I was very disappointed to find out they don't make them anymore. Can anyone tell me why this is? I am having a hard time finding one but don't know if its because people aren't getting rid of theirs or they are not lasting long enough to resell. This will be the first time I bought a car costing more than three thousand and it is going to have to last me for several years. I will be using it to drive back and forth to work witch is about 100 miles round trip so its going to have to be reliable and not nickel and dime me to death. Out of the three I have found the one I like the best is an 08 with 49k miles on it. the asking price is 19,000. If anyone could give me some insight as to help me with this decision it would be much appreciated. this should take you to a picture of the one I'm wanting if it helps at all. http://www.carmax.com/enus/view-car-gallery/default.html?sn=8822558&zip=40515

Shannon... not sure how far Irvine, KY is for you, but there were [2] Sport Tracs, [1] Gen 1 [2001-2005] & [1] Gen 2 [2007-2010] @ Two Rivers Ford on Wednesday this week. And there was a STA on Ebay Motors this week too.

As far as Sport Tracs not lasting long enough to sell... I have a '01 w/155k+ miles on it [bought new in 2000]. As well as our son has a '05 ST XLT w/195k+ miles on his[bought used from 2 Rivers Ford in '06 BTW]. And I am now breaking in a '10 STA w/18k miles on it [ also bought new from 2 Rivers Ford BTW]. It's pretty much like w/any vehicle, it depends on your level of TLC [a.k.a. rountine maintenance & upkeep].

FYI: not to discourage you, but as for your 100 mile daily round trip, it will take you 5-6 gallons of gas per day driving a Sport Trac, depending upon highway or stop & go traffic. Just the cost of riding in style!

Hope this helps.

Good Luck in your search.

Your commute puts you at 24K a year, a ton of miles. We all want reliability, so any car you buy is going to need attention to regular maintenance. I estimate your fuel bill alone to be over $300 a month, so choose carefully. If you've got the budget, I'd look at a VW Jetta diesel, Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 for better fuel economy, but you still need to budget for maintenance. Ford's decision to terminate the ST was based on sales - it was a niche model, one of the thousands of choices available in the car market. Trac you're looking at looks fairly clean. Good luck with your decision.

Just reliability, no mention of fuel economy concerns from the OP.
