One of the major factors when I chose the Trac back in '04 was for it's practicality and versatility. On a recent road-trip from L.A. to Vegas and San Francisco, my Trac proved its worth again. With three passengers including my fifteen month old boy, and a bed (with aftermarket tonneau) full of luggage, drinks, and a stroller , my Trac drove great. The V6 had adequate power going over the hills and its relatively compact size was an asset around San Francisco. The only complaint I heard from mom-in-law and wifey was the AC being too cold.

With a growing family, my growing concern is interior space. Right now I have a rear-facing car seat strapped at the center of the rear bench. Having to put car seats (God-willing, for a second and third child) directly behind either of the front seats would necessitate a very upright and forward seating position which is uncomfortable for my height. I'd like a lot more shoulder-to-shoulder room too, as well as more storage features on the dash/console and glove compartment (like the double tier glove compartment from some competitors).

My Trac is 8 years old and has 97K miles. It looks and feels like it has another 8 years left so it will be hard to let it go before then. But it will definitely be too small for my family then. The Flex and new Explorer are my first choices for replacement but their mileage is not much of an upgrade from the Trac's (considering I want no less than an EcoBoosted engine). But I'm so attached to my Trac it will be hard to let it go when the day comes.

I totally agree. Maybe you could find a 2010 with low miles and replace your 2004 with a Gen 2 Trac which was really well built and has a ton of other options around safety and stability.

200K on my '01. Its still going strong but VT winters are taking a toll. Looking to replace as soon as I can find the right truck. Low mileage Gen1 4X4s are not easy to find. At least not in the color combination I like.

A less expensive solution would be to look for different sized baby seats. Are you and the missus' planning on one baby after another? Give this one a couple of years, then use the seat for the new baby and buy a booster for the first when old enough! Sounds better than getting rid of the truck. JMO, Bob
