I just bought a 04 ST and I noticed that the 'low fuel ' message came on when my guage was reading around 1/8 of a tank.Does anyone know approximatley how much fuel is left when the message comes on. I don't plan on running my tank down that low on a regular basis but I am curious. Thanks

No clue. You could try to run it out of gas. Just keep a can in the bed so when you run out, you will be stuck.

maybe its cuz im asian but...

here ya go lol (yes i joke bout being asian and good at math...and science :p)

22.5 x (ill do mine) 18 = 405 miles per tank.

22.5 / 8 = about 2.8 gal

2.8 x 18 = 50.4 miles per 8th of a tank

or u could 405 / 8 = about 50.6

so at an 8th of a tank you have roughly 50.5 miles

thats pretty accurate for me, but it would depend heavily on how hard u gas it and stuff...

and my "E" light dont come on till its right on the line towards the bottom... so id say bout 16th of a tank which would be about 25 miles...

hope that was atleast slightly helpful :D

on my 07 it comes on at the 50 mile left to empty mark. but on the gen 1 , i would agree with fast eddie as that is what i remeber on my 04.

I have an '01 with the 20.5 gal tank and even when I've waited what I thought was too long (light on, needle below the zero line, etc.), I've never been able to get more than 19 in when I fill up.

in my brothers explorer sport he lives 22 miles away from the gas station and from his house to the station if he starts when the fuel light comes on he can get to the gas station but you can tell its almost dry.

Two Gals left in mine, but not a good thing to do as the fuel pump is cooled by being submerged in gas.

Try to never let it go below a 1/4 tank.

My Rangers all had about 4 gallons when the fuel light came. My 04 Sport Trac fuel gauge always indicates I have more fuel than I do (at half a tank it takes 15 gal. The one time my low fuel light came on I was waiting in line to fill up. When I filled the tank it took 21.5 gallons. Dealer claimed people were complaining the low fuel warning light was coming on too soon so they set it to come one with less fuel remaining. I liked that 4 gal. margin better.

I don't buy into that statement completely. While being submerged in fluid (gas) certainly helps keep it cool, I think the action of the gas going through the pump is what is providing the primary cooling.

The fuel flowing through the pump is what actually cools the pump. That said, it can only be as cool as the fuel it is submerged in. After a long drive, the fuel is shockingly hot. This is when fuel pumps fail the most as they expand and internally short out and create poor performance.
