Man I wish we had an Autobahn here in Texas. It's the perfect place for one. Takes 10 hours to drive across the state. An Autobahn would cut that time in half. Of course it would never work. We have to many idiots that drive slow in the left lane.

Tom,

How right you are!! With the idiots they let out on the roads here, an unlimited speed limit would be chaos!!! And after about 6 months of them 'thinning out the herd', it might be fun to drive that fast... I-5 to the Southland in 3 hours!!!

Then again, driver training in Europe is much more intensive than here in the States...

I would probably incur heavy fines for making 'gestures' at other drivers, which is illegal on the Autobahn.

Drivers in Poland have very stringent training too. However, gasoline is so expensive that they only drive on special occasions. They are so inexperienced that they forget how to drive. Some of them are very dangerous. I let one drive my car once and I had to get out and park the car before she ran into a building. This wasn't even parallel parking. She couldn't figure out which way to turn the wheels when she was backing up!

Nelson, isn't the cost of a license over there very high as well, and thus another deterent to driving?

Of course, over here, parents will still pay the price so they won't have to drive their kids everywhere.

What speed limit?

I spent a week in Big Bend National Park with my girlfriend while I was in college. On the way home we took the route through Ft. Stockton to I-10. I was asleep (it was 3AM) and she was driving. I woke up to the sound of her little Datsun 610 buzzing like mad. I looked over, and she was running about 90. This was in the era of the 55 limit, and I asked her if she was afraid of getting a ticket. She said "no, look to the left". I looked over as a semi came up and passed us. Then another one. I asked her if she'd seen any cops. She said "yeah, a state trooper passed a little while ago". He was running even faster than the trucks! Was he chasing anyone? No!

The highway out there in West Texas is almost perfectly straight for miles and miles. My mom has driven over 100mph out there without even realizing it.

I10 out toward Ft Stockton is 80 MPH. 80 starts just after you get out of San Antone headed West. You want a fun drive with no LE, take 285 S from Ft S to Sanderson. But watch for the deer

Actually, previously on that same trip I nailed a jackrabbit with that little Datsun. On the road between Big Bend and Ft. Stockton at about 1AM or so. When I saw him he was on the far right, right at the shoulder. I went all the way over to the other side, and he stayed still until we got about 50 ft. away, then he decided the other side was safer. He was wrong.:(

dreman,,,I ran the trip from El Paso to Pasadena, Tx. in 1973, in a little over 10 hrs.

I did this in a Gremlin X, with a warmed up 304 V8. Had headers and carburation, ignition and suspension upgrades. On the wide open I10, a guy runing next to me was clocking me at 137 mph. My speedo was way off BC of oversized tires. Got stoped between Kerrvile and San Antonio by DPS. Clocked at 110mph. Told him I just got out of the army. The fine was 80 in a 70, WHEW!! I even stoped for 30minites to say Hi to one of my aunts in San Antonio.

My folks where shock to see me pull up in the driveway so soon.

At sea level and bigger carb jets that Gremlin would run over 145.
