Has anyone purchased tires via mail order? How did that work out in terms of installation, warranty, etc? Based on shipping costs, etc the numbers don't seem to justify the hassel. Just wondering if anyone was pleased in doing this.

I was pricing tires just a few weeks ago. Tirerack.com had some really good prices. Their system was that you purchase the tires and ship them to where you would like. They had a list of tire shops on their network. They all had ratings too, with prices.

For example, I was pricing the Revos. A set for around $650 shipped to a place nearby. The place had great reviews. So what I would have to do is have them shipped to a tire shop, (mentioned on the site) when they recieved them, they would give you a call to set up a time to install. Their price was $20 a tire to install. I thought it was a great deal, but Firestone ended up beating it by a few bucks.

Hope it helps.

I buy all of my tires from tirerack.com. I've never had a problem. I have a local shop that does all of my work and they install my tires for about $50. Back in Nov. I got 4 dueler Revo's shipped and installed for $550. I couldn't beat the price locally.

I get my tires from Discount Tire Direct. They offer fast free shipping, no tax, and some of the best prices I could find. They were also cheaper than Tire Rack on the last 2 tires I bought but I always compare the 2 places.

Like Tire Rack they list installers in your area, installation charges, and some also let you ship directly to them.

Tires only I buy from Discounttire.com or Tires.com. I have them shipped directly to my local discount tire and have them mount them. I can always get a discount on the mounting and balancing.

I bought tires through Tire Rack for my Infiniti and it worked out great. I got a better deal than I originaly planned by involving Discount Tire Comp. This is what I did.......

Went to my local Discount Tire Company location and told them exactly what I wanted and the price Tire Rack would sell them to me for. Discount Tire Company ordered them directly from Tire Rack and got a better price and passed the savings on to me. Of course the tires were shipped to the Discount Tire location and since my purchase was actually through them so I get the Free (well it's not actually Free but you know what i mean) rotation and balance just like you usually get. It worked out perfect and saved me a few xtra $$$ as well. :)

My mechanic really does not sell tires. He will get you tires if you need them but preferred me to shop on tirerack.com and drop ship them to him. I then scheduled when I can drop off the car for him to install. Saved some money. Worked out well for me.

I've bought from Tire Rack a couple of times. Mostly if it's a killer deal or I simply can't find the tire I want locally. +/- $10 a tire shipping, my friend's tire shop will mount, balance, and dispose of the old tires for $10 each. A lot of the chain stores will charge you that anyway. Ends up being about a wash.

I use Tire Rack based on past info from you guys . Two days to Hawaii which is pretty amazing.

Costco is also cheap and they balance, rotate forever, but they don't carry anything in stock over a 15" wheel so it takes 3-4 weeks to arrive here.
