Bill V, I think the site had another troll and all of his posts were deleted...

The man's car is not in the years covered by the recall.

I think he's just trying to ride this Toyota fiasco to get out of jail free.

Say what you will about stereotypes, but Vancouver, BC actually required rolling to get out of the way of crazed asian drivers more than once, and going to my local Thai restaurant is like playing Frogger, only the cars are hell-bent on getting you.

Also, the man still cannot speak English, despite being here for years, and obviously having driven on our roads. Even if the accelerator stuck, he's guilty of a whole host of crimes, starting with reckless endangerment, for driving on our streets without speaking English, and probably not being able to read it either.

This laziness and extreme disregard for common sense and the lives of others has greatly lowered the man in my eyes. If he were to be retried, I'd have to call jury nullification :(

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a limited recall of some 1996 Camrys that year for cruise-control systems that "fail to hold the speed set by the driver and can accelerate above the intended set speed." It is unclear whether Koua Fong Lee's Camry was one of those recalled under that order.

Very sad indeed.

Why did nobody hear about this issue they speak of?

I am not saying that the man is not at fault, but if he isn't, this is wrong!

Tom

I remember the camry cruise recalls. Some of them wouldnt shut off. To late for his reinvestigation. His has been crushed and recycled now.

His criminal attorney, Brent Schafer, advised him not to answer specific questions from a reporter Friday about whether he'd been using the cruise control or what he remembered about his speed as he traveled up the ramp.

Yeah, because him doing so could bring this case to a quick close.

If he was using the cruise control, then he should say yes, because that will put doubt on the ruling since his car may have been recalled....since he is not saying yes, and has NO reason to not say yes (unless he likes prison that much) I'm seeing guilt.

This man has been in our country for 6 years and still cannot speak English to save his own hide?! Seriously, the "Speak English in 5 years or you're deported" law should have been set in stone. Now, how can you also not pass a GED test in 6 years? It's not like you have anything else to do in prison, and they come in all languages. A practice GED takes only 6 hours to complete, and it is remedial.

Also, how is this guy going to buy his kids presents when he is in jail? How is he getting money? If he has money, shouldn't it have been assigned as restitution to the family he careened into?

Caymen, I concur, it seems like Toyota has been under perpetual recall for over a decade. I didn't really even hear about these recalls before this article.

LOL. I know if I'm driving my wife's 06 RAV4 and get pulled over for speeding, I'm going to claim it was from "sudden acceleration".

That would only be OK if the USA had a national language.

I am not supporting this guy, but if we do not have a national language, we have no right making somone speak one particular one.

Tom

If we had a law that said "If you can't speak English after 5 years of residency here, your lazy behind doesn't want to be here, so you're first in line at the Deportation Station", then that law would make English the de facto national language, solving your complaint.

And yet another update--now the family of the VICTIMS is taking steps to try to get the driver of the other car released from prison...

That law wouldn't be fair. We have 2nd and 3rd generation (and more distant) American families living in inner cities, and in the deep south, etc, that can't/don't speak English. Where do we deport those ignorant folks to?

I believe that's his point.

How well would you have to speak it? Most native southerners speak English with such a strong drawl that it's incomprehensible. Can we boot them all out too? :D

Bill V,

That's was my point as well. There are people in this country that I SWEAR aren't speaking English. Lot's of them try to AXE me queshions all dah times!
