The good news - We'll I got my truck back today and both sides where fixed (manifold studs)...they said all were easy except two that had to be drilled out.

The bad news - They told me last oil change or two that there was some noise in the rear that did not sound great. Well, now they are saying that the bearings in the rear are getting worse...

I have 56k on the vehicle, am I just unlucky?

When I had the oil changed on my '07 4x4 ST, the guy told me that both differential magnet plugs were caked with fine metal shavings. Not good for 25k miles! I'm taking it in in the morning to have a Ford service technician pull both covers and check tolerances, look for damage and signs of excessive wear etc. If mine look like they're only going to last for 56k miles, I'm going to insist that they fix it now under warranty. I'll let you know when I get the results.

You didn't say which bearings. If it's the outer bearings on an IRS, then that wouldn't be related to my differential worries.

I got it done under warranty. I bought it of lease with 36k, then bought an extended warranty up to 100k. I have a very good relationship with the shop I finally brought it to (initially they did not want to do it)...I think they told me the "book" says fours hour per side...

Following up: I had them pull the covers and inspect both differentials, and they found no problems. I got fresh full-synthetic lube to replace what drained out. That should help my peace of mind for some time to come, unless I start hearing strange noises.

Sorry, looks like my inspection sheds no new light on your problem.
