I have a class II hitch welded to frame of my 2007 but want to tow more than 3500 lbs. Anyone had success installing a class III w/o going to Ford for their $1,100. version?

I've asked this question a couple of times. There is some thought that the cross member for the factory installed class III hitch is identical, so if you can find someone to cutout the class II receiver and weld in class III tube, that may do the trick. Again, this has been a thought. I've asked if anyone knows for sure if the crossmember are the same, I couldn't get a definite answer.

If you find out any more, I would love to hear.

Thanks

As far as I know in from many discussions, the crossmember is the same. While you can cut off the Class II and weld on a Class III, the problem is finding someone who will do it due to liability considerations. Damned lawyers....

Yes the x-member is the same except for a round tube put through it for the 7 pin connector. But the liability issue will limit who will do it for you. Could be you could have someone qualified to cut the old one out and fit the new one, but not weld it in. then have someone that is good at welding in their garage to finish it. Just a suggestion.

I think Todd Z. stated, that a class lll/lV can be bolted on below the existing one. Then you'll have the option to use which ever is appropriate. BC
