About 2 years ago, I posted a video on youtube "showing off" my Clear Gearz differential cover.

So far, I have had over 30,000 views. I never thought anything about it.

I recieved an email from youtube...

Dear caymengt,

Your video Clear Gearz has become popular on YouTube, and you're eligible to apply for the YouTube Partnership Program, which allows you to make money from playbacks of your video.

Once you're approved, making money from your video is easy. Here's how it works: First sign into your YouTube account. Then, complete the steps outlined here: http://www.youtube.com/ivp?v=BZ1Y_goOb-g. Once you're finished, we'll start placing ads next to your video and pay you a share of the revenue as long as you meet the program requirements.

We look forward to adding your video to the YouTube Partnership Program. Thanks and good luck!

The YouTube Team

Has anyone done this? Did it work out? Would you do it again?

I know I am not going to "get rich" on this. I am just wondering if this is worth my time or not.

Free money is free money, unless it comes with a price tag.

I signed into Youtube and went from there. It is legit.

Tom,

I've heard of many people making money off of their youtube channels. There are countless twits who blather on into their own video cameras, have a regular following of over 1,000 "fans" and make a pretty penny each month.

Case in point: ijustine (Warning: you may be dumber after viewing this video)

I didn't watch the video so I have no idea what its about. I doubt its offensive though.

Its annoying that this is all people do for a living, but hopefully s#!t will come around to bite them in the ass eventually.

I say if you can make a few bucks from a video you just happen to post, all the power to ya ;) it means people are looking at your page for a reason, and YouTube figures they can make a few extra bucks by posting ads on your video's page so they might as well cut you in on the deal.

Congrats!

Annoyed, or just "jealous" (doing Jon Lovitz voice).

I'm not sure what there is to get annoyed about or why you would want people that are making money to get bit in the arse.

People are clicking, people are getting entertained; advertisers are racking up viewings on their ads (called "impressions" in industry lingo). Why shouldn't the content providers share in the money?

Why shouldn't the content providers share in the money?

Because they don't have to. There are enough idiots posting crap and people watching. I had no idea you could make money doing this.

Because they don't have to.

You are correct, but if you "share the wealth", you stimulate people to make more videos.

I first thought the email was a scam, but after research and looking into my youtube account directly, this is not a scam.

I have to agree with Caymen on this.

When Google bought Youtube it was clear that they were going to take it commercial. Google makes an overwhelming majority of its billions for Google Ads revenue, and content owners that place Google ads within their web content get a part of that revenue.

Youtube, Facebook, and other media and social networking sites are "sticky" and drawing all the eyeballs and mouse clicks.

Whether we like it or not, the reality is that where there are people, and eyes, and interaction there will be advertising, and that means money.

Go for it Caymen.

BTW, love that vid. Thought it was really cool. I posted it on here a long time ago.. And learned the Tom on there was our very own MYST Tom..

The comments on that video are sad, but hilarious ;)

So, when do you want us to watch your video en masse to rack up $$ for you? ;)

the video would have been much more interesting if the cover blew off and the diff fluid shot out all over the place
