I would like to know if anyone here has or knows anyone that has added a functional hood scoop to their Sport Trac or Explorer? I have a 2002 SportTrac and am wanting to add this for better breathing purposes and to rid the hot air under the hood. Please send pictures from other sites if anyone knows of any or of your vehicle! Also, I like the deal about this throttle zip tie deal. Are MPG's effected by this? Please explain further about this. Is it better to check the butterfly in the TB housing for pitch and to adjust? If so, how do you adjust the TB butterfly? Thanks, G.S.

One scoop usually will not both intake cool air and expel hot air. For cool air you need a type of ram air scoop, and required ducting to get it to the airbox. These normally face forward, although a few are by the cowl. To expel hot air you need heat extraction vents. These normally face rearward, louvers are an example of heat extraction vents. The Adrenalin concept ST has heat extraction vents as well.

Keystone make a new hood and shaker scoop that can be made functional...it costs about $800 last time I checked. Check out the project section for a member project on this.

MPG isn't effected by the ziptie mod, it does nothing to increase performance, no matter what anyone thinks. The only thing you'll gain is the use of a full WOT, which could be seen as a performance increase, but it's simply just restoring something lose due to age.

To check the butterfly, remove the intake tube at the throttle body. You'll have to remove the beauty cover to do this. Then have someone press the throttle down to the floor and check the angle of the butterfly...if it's not opening all the way, add a zip tie or two.

Is it the side fender vents or the hood vents that ramp up and level with the rest of the hood towards the windsheild of the vehicle that are the heat extraction vents? I saw the shaker hood and thought it was kinda pricey! I know it will not be cheap to do this though. Thanks for the quick replies! G.S.

I'm not sure the fender vents were actually functional, but given thier placement, if they were, they'd be used for heat extraction.

The concept of these styles of hoods is that air will pass through the radiator, then up and out of the engine bay...given that the radiator is very hot, it prevents this hot air from entering to far into the engine bay. To a lesser extent, and how louvers work, is through the the swirling effect of the air behind the vent, the creates a low pressure area that will literaly pull hot air out.

This is a pic of the Adrenalin extractors, the Lancer Evo uses similar extractors, and race cars use louvers and extractors...of course much, much larger.

On the Ford GT, on there rear deck you can see many small louvers....these, while mostly ineffective because of the size, do extract heat from engine bay. Now on the front, there are two very large extractors behind the radiator, this not only helps front downforce, but helps maximize the cooling effiency of the radiator, it's surrounded by nice cool air. There is also a small intake scoop, although I'm not sure what it's for, other then maybe the HVAC system.

Man Tiger! Thanks for all the helpful hints and info. I may not do much of a mod, but I was thinking about it. I am sure it will be effective especially during the cooler months to suck even more cooler air through my K&N. I'll be looking into doing something, custom or whatever. Thanks, Gary

lol, no problem...I spend way too much time over at mulsannescorner.com, a nifty site going over race car aerodynamics, espically LeMans Prototypes.
