Need Java Info

My wife teaches 5th grade math. She found a website that will help her with instructional material. The site displayed a message that we need to upgrade Java for the site to fully functional. How do I do this and are there any security concerns with running Java ?

Java is safe, it's a type of programming language that websites will use for added interactivity. Flash is phasing Java out it seems though.
