Hi, I am a new member with a recently purchased '05 Sport Trac with 4.0 v-6, auto. It has 35K and looks and drives like new. Factory sticker label says 16 mpg city, 21 hwy--I drive very carefully and get 14 city, 17 overall. Any suggestions? A few years back I owned a Ranger with a 4.0 v-6 and found it to be very reliable (but thirsty). Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this to be a reliable and long life engine with an "old design". I am happy with my Sport Trac even though I read it has rollover problems.

Also, I am curious as to your opions on best oil and frequency of changes. I have a hunch that long intervals between oil changes (synthetic, 5k to 10k) would mean going too long between lube jobs. I would appreciate any suggestions and am enjoying this forum.

Thanks, Tommy.

most here use mobil 1 or royal purple but me, i have always used the factory filter and pennzoil 5-30 every 3000 miles and it runs great. I own an 02 which i bought new and next week i should roll over to 100,000 miles and yess these engines are very reliable my dad buys rangers and never retires them until 300,000 miles! with only normal maintenance

Tommy, welcome to the site. If you have a heavy foot, you will get poor milage, & rollover problems are caused by drivers. Drive conservatively and safely, and neither will be a problem.

Hi, and welcome to the fold. Check out all the post on replacing the shocks and sway bars. That should be your first mods that you do. Then hold on to your wallet!

Welcome to the site, Tommy. :driving:

I use Royal Purple throughout, but next oil change I am going to Amsoil throughout. :supercool:

I agree with Gary D. on doing the suspension mods. After changing to a cold air intake, single-in / duel-out exhaust, and a Zabtech throttle body the best bang for the buck is a SCT XCalibrator tuner from Torrie (site sponsor) @ Unleashed Tuning.

It's a thirsty engine and compared to a Ranger, a Sport Trac is almost 1000 pounds heavier.

My '08 V6 is rated at 19 highway but with the cat-back exhaust and K&N I get 22 if I keep it under 70 mph.

I use Mobil 1 0w-30 Fuel Economy Formula and change it every 5000 miles. Don't worry about going too long between lube jobs because there is nothing in the chassis to lubricate anyway. It's all sealed.

amsoil is the way to go i buy the expensive filter and 7500 mile oil just bought a wix tranny filter from summit and amsoil tranny fliud ( they say its better ) and they have 100,000 mile gear lube!

Welcome to the Fam dude.

I use royal purple and go about 5000now

Awesome things to get for the trac first:

SCT programmer, shocks... and apparently a sway bar cuz everyone rags on me for not having one :bwahaha: soon for me tho

I have a 2008 V6 ST and I'm about to purchase a SCT tuner/programmer for mine and possibly a Zabteck throttle body and/or change something in the exhaust. I just wished they made a cold air intake for the 4.0 but no one does. Just change your oil every 5,000 miles and you'll be fine. I have had two 3.0L Rangers, a 4.0L Ranger, and now a 4.0 Sport Trac and they have all been good vehicles. :supercool:

I have an 04 Trac with 115,000 miles on it. It's completely stock from top to bottom and it runs and drives great. I use the factory suggested oil and change it every 4,000 miles. I really don't see the need in all the suspension and performance mods. I don't plan on racing anyone anytime soon. It's a everyday driver work truck, not a race truck. I get about 17-19 mpg on the hwy. That's about as good as you can get with the 4.0. I like the truck and plan keeping it for a while. More power to you guys who sink all that money into your truck but mine runs and drives just fine without all that.
