Your actually better off installing ceramic pads for $45.00 and never worry about dust again, and you can still keep the cooling of the brakes, rather than using shields and keeping the dust allover the suspension and other parts..
I agree with Todd Z. After market brake pads are far superior to Ford's OEM pads they put on the Sport Trac. They give better stopping power, better wear, and far less brake dust on your wheels.
I run kleen wheels dust shields front and rear on my '04 trac. I tend to drive aggressive. Never had a problem with the brakes feeling too hot. I also have them on my wifes '01 escape since new, no problems. I wouldnt run them on a race car though...
With regard to the wipers, tilt the steering wheel and see if that corrects the problem. The ST's are known for having the wiring too short up into the steering column. If the wheel has been tilted a lot, it tends to effect some of the controls on the column.
I was thinking about getting the kleen wheels shields because I am constantly cleaning my wheels of brake dust. Todd Z makes a nice concise point. For about the same price you can get new ceramic pads so I think I might do that, probably not until sprint as I dont worry about being clean and shiny in the winter.
Curious as to any disadvantages of ceramic pads anyone have opinions or experiences there.
Firedog,The only thing I have heard is that ceramic pads will wear your rotor down faster. This was told to me by my father in lawthat had talked to a local mechanic. He said that he had changed more rotors that had ceramics on them then regular pads. But for me I think that if it is wearing the rotor down it is doing its job of stopping. So it is second hand info._Ron
Ron, you are right. I was told that at Automotive Tech school (this was when the ceramics were just getting popular)and that was why I never used them till my last change. I tried semi-metallic with my drilled and slotted rotors and within 2 days the rims were entirely black. With the ceramics, I don't have to wash the ST just to get the rims clean. I actually have to wash it because the body is dirty. I just figure the rotors will wear eventually anyway, why have the rims black in the process. (plus alot less squeeling with the ceramics)
