The NHL has announced that this year's regular season schedule includes an outdoor game, on New Year's Day in Buffalo.

When they first started this, i thought this was the best. I wanted to travel to Canada (i think Edmonton was the first) to see the game.

Michigan and Michigan State had an outdoor hockey game at Spartan Stadium a few years ago. It was neat, but I don't think they will ever do it too often -- too hard to get a consistent ice surface outdoors.

Rocks

Ohio State and Wisconsin played a year or two ago as well, in Lambeau Field. It was a huge success. I'm sure success like that one, and the one in Spartan Stadium, contributed (and will continue to do so) to the NHL and others having events like this.

I agree that with basketball, it was a gimmick. But with hockey, with so many hockey fans used to seeing youth and other levels of hockey played outdoors, it seems a more natural extension to me.

Adam, I also loved that pic. There were some really neat pics from that game. Would have been cool to see it live, but I'm not a huge fan of the cold. Thank God that the Pens don't have the "Retractable Roof" in the development of the new arena. They spent all the money to have the one put on the Igloo and the only time it gets opened is for a movie. Would have been neat to watch one with it open in real life though.;)

Back when I was in college in Pitt when they had the Pittsburgh Phantoms roller hockey team i went to a few of those games and they opened the roof a few times, but that was during the summer.

It sold out in about an hour! Guess I'll have to watch on TV.

With the wacky weather we've been having the past few winters, I give it even odds of a blizzard or sunny and 50 degrees.
