That looks cool....but what about when the little trap door fails to seal and OBD codes it..$500 replacepent at the dealer instead of buying an aftermarket cap for a few bucks...:wacko:

He said Chrysler and GM will jointly purchase the caps from the same supplier to take advantage of volume price discounts.

I'm all for saving money where practical--but seriously, are demand for these at either of those companies so low that they gain significant cost savings by pooling their resources on this???

Sounds like one or both of them should join one of the group buys on this site!!!! :D

Easy way to avoid those scratches...buy a locking gas cap ($20 for a Stant locking cap) so then you have to put it up on your tonneau, b/c it doesn't have a cord.

I didn't even notice the scratches unitl some people on this site started bringing it up. I cut my tether off and now just lay the cap in the bed while I fill up. Even if I'm having a brain fart and forget to put the cap back on, at least I'll know where to find it.

I'll have to take a look...my tether seems too stiff, the cap plastic too dull and my unscrewing and dropping of the cap too, well, soft, to cause any scratching whatsoever. Before reading this I would have said that someone would actually have to WORK to scratch the bed with their gas caps.

"It eliminates the inconvenience of forgetting to put your gas cap back on after refueling," Mark Fields, president of Ford's Americas group said Wednesday at the Management Briefing Seminars. "It's also better for the environment because no gas fumes escape. It's the direct result of listening to our customers."

I don't get it, all the customer feedback they get, and that is what they listen to?? :wacko:

What is odd? My daughters 87 Corrolla has one of those cap hangers on the inside of the gas door lid. How hard is that too make? Screw the cap off place the cap on the back of the gas door.

Sometimes Ford just amazes me.

a piece of plastic, 10 mins work = no more scratches...

With my left hand I open the cap and put the gas pump in with my right. Once the pump is in I sling the gas cap over it. And it just hangs there while the gas pumps. Aren't all pumps created equal for everyone to be doing this? No big deal, just wondering.

I cut the tether off of my cap and I just rest it on one of the tie down things.

The capless idea is interesting, but what will the handle of the pump rest on?

TJR,

The gasoline weakens and softens the clearcoat over time, making it succeptible to

scratches (overflow and "drippage" on the paint when you pull the fuel nozzle out). ;

Fast Eddie, ( Hi, By the Way!),

That will probably be one of those "Job 1" type things, that will need a little tweaking.

It will be an ECDI (Emission Control Device Item) no doubt, and be subjected to

coverage by the manufacturer for longer than the usual 3-36K warranty. Sometimes up

to 10 years or 150,000 miles, like a catalytic converter, or such.;

Cory,

It's own Laurels!!!

Can Trac,

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best!:)

Nobleman,

Sorry. Didn't mean to ignore your post.

Yes, of all the feedback that customers have given about slipping trannies, fugly

front and rear ends, sorry dealership experiences, they choose to focus on a part that

you cannot see when the vehicle is travelling down the road, hidden behind a door.

A fuel cap is part of an important emission system, nowadays. It should be taught in

drivers education. How to check your oil, check air pressure in the tires, check your lights, PUT THE GAS CAP BACK ON!, after being taught how to SAFELY refuel. These are all a

part of the "Driving Experience"! It's been 28 years since I've been to a Driver Education

class, I would hope they would include these things now...:unsure:

Eh, here in NJ we're not "allowed" to pump our own gas, so you get some punk who doesn't give 2 cents about your vehicle and the unscrew it and let it bang against the side of the truck, putting lots of little scratches in it:angry:

Oh, and yeah, when I was 16, I was one of those punks :wacko:
