I'm about to hit 20K and it's time for another oil change.

I was going to switch to full synthetic last time, but it slipped my mind at the time.

This time around, I've got a case of Royal Purple in my truck, but I thought I'd ask you all for advise on which filter to go with.

Should I just let the dealer throw their Motorcraft one in or should I stop on the way and pick up something else?

Obviously not Fram, but what about RP, K&N, etc.

Thanks,

Kevin

Stick with the Motorcraft filter. I've always used them on all of my Ford vehicles for over 25 years. Can't beat 'em for the money.

How long do you plan to go between oil changes with the RP? Nothing wrong with Motorcraft filters but if your going to go 10k or longer between changes like I do than I would suggest a premium filter. I use the K&N. I buy them from Amazon for around $10. No tax, free shipping if order is above $25.

If your going to plunk down that kind of money for premium oil than you might as well go for the best.

10k miles between changes? that would be nice, but wow...

I just changed mine yesterday with 35k miles at 5k intervals and it still looked good. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic

For 5k oil changes, I use motorcraft. I recently got a deal, $24 for castrol-syn and k&n filter. I will be going to 10k changes. With a filter @ 5k and add a quart.

With syn-blend, motorcraft and 5k changes.

Total waste of money running a good synthetic just 5k. A good dyno would be just as good and more than half the price. These days most manufactures are recommending 7.5k oil changes and that's not even with synthetic.

I totally agree. I dare you to run a full synthetic for 10K miles, take a sample of the oil and spend a few $$ to have it tested(analyzed).....my bet is the test will show the full synthetic oil is still good even after 10K miles. I do up to 10K miles in my C5 Vette w/Mobil1 all the time. It's been documented and proven that the oil will last 10K miles with no harm to the motor.

I know there are several threads regarding good/better/best oil & filters.

Everyone has their own opinion and their own experience or expertise.

I appreciate your responses.

I ended up going with Motorcraft since I figured I couldn't go wrong with what the dealer would put in (especially at $3.69 vs $10-$20).

Thanks again!

I agree with TomT.

Todays full synthetic oils will last well past 10K miles and if you are using a high priced synthetic oil like RP, you are throwing money away by not getting the extra mileae that RP offiers.

If you plan on using an extended oil change interval with your RP oil, then by all means spend a few dollars more and get a top quality oil filter.

My 2008 Mercedes Benz comes from the factory with Mobil-1 and only requires oil changes once per year or every 13K miles, whichever comes first. Another factor in that equations is that the Mercedes 3.0 Litre, V6 engine holds 9 quarts of Mobil-1. That nearly twice the oil most V6 engines require so that means leass wear and tear on the oil.

Rodger,

Ya, That's what I said when I got the bill for my first oilc change last July !!!

I even ask the service manager if 9 quarts was right? He assured me that it was correct and stated that many late model Mercedes engines hold nearly twice the oil than other brands. My independent checking confirms that the MB V6, 3.0L engine holds 9 quarts. The MB dealership now charges $8.43 per quart of Mobil-1 10W30, and $15 for the oil filter, which is part of the $250 annual service charge.

I only have 19K miles on my 2008 C300, and I have owned it since the end of January 2008. (about 18 months).

...or use Amsoil oil and an Amsoil filter and change it at 26,000 miles or once a year.

Been doing that since my Trac had a few miles on her. Now she has 100,000 miles and runs perfectly.

All this with a little 5 quart system too...

Note to self, MB service charges are a waste of money.

Tom & Rodger,

Note to self. It's too much trouble to change oil on the MB. Engine compartment has belly-pan cover/s, etc., In fact, everything is under a cover except the exhaust and suspension. I don't have any MB service manuals to know what is in tolerance and what is not and I have not found any for sale yet.

Frankly, I don't have the time to do that. I take it to the dealer and I get another free MB loaner for any warranty or service I have done there. Plus I get a free wash and vaccum every time I take the car there.

Yes, I could do the service myself a lot cheaper, but $250 a year is not so bad, and I know it was done right. Besides, I value my time more than that, and prefer not to spend it crawling around under my car. I've been there and done that for too many years

I get more fun out of working on my vehicles than driving them!

'tis a privelige to do your own maintenance! Save money and know it was done correctly by someone who cares a lot more about your car.
