The Wife and I have been shopping around for an elliptical machine for our home. It seems that all products have some good and some bad reviews. We're not trying to spend the thousands on a life fitness or pre-cor but, we would like to get as close to club quality as possible. Maybe 1k-1.5k range.

Does anyone have experience with different models? We've been looking at New balance 9.5e and Sole fitness E35 models. Haven't been able to see a Sole model in person, actually haven't heard of them until now. Any makes/models to definitely stay away from? Everyone's advice is always great on this site.

Oh yeah, dropped Trac off this morning with the issues and they immediately put me in a rental. Tranny, steering shudder, vibration, timing chain. I asked them to throw in a replacement to the cruise control switch (I have the red one), but got a no go without paying:(. Worth a try.

what does the red one look like? also, keep us updated as far as the tranny goes, I have the exact same and so far my fix is going to be the xcal2 at the end of the month

We bought a nordic trac CX1055 from Sears, it was 999.00 and is a great machine. I would recommend this unti to anyone.

Big D- Check my library, there is a cruise pic that points to the red switch. This is the one that has problems but no recall has been issued.

You might check local garage sales... seems like many folks buy these things then never use them.

C, I bought a Tunturi about 2 years ago. the design I bought was discontinued, not sure why, but it has held up to my abuse. I use it 3-4 times a week for 30 mins and I weigh in at 220.I would recommend taking a look at those. Also, I purchased mine from a fitness store, it was a floor model, for around 1100.

i'd recommend shopping around. go to a few places (sears, sports authority, etc.) and talk to their associates a little bit. though i am biased cause i've worked at sears before, i'd go and try to get one of the returns (they're fine, plus the return policy is a little more liberal on those) and then probably get the protection agreement on it. you'd be getting virtually a new one (most returns were because of a small problem and it's fixed) and you get 3-5 years of protection on it, all for the same price of a brand new one. just my two cents.
