I think it's a scam. Although I did read a few things. The person mentioned early on it was his friends phone. Then it was his and he demanded an apology. I'm not doing this for money...but now there's a donation page.

I can be vindicitive but this is a bit much. Losing sleep and work over a friends phone. I seriously doubt it. But...it was a slightly entertaining read. Did we get our regularly scheduled snopes review yet on this topic? I'll check it out.

I hate when people try to do anything by claiming they are in the military or police (or both).

I do agree with the quality of NYC services being low these days, so in that respect, if this is all true, I hope they stick to their guns.

Truly sad that this was the conclusion this story had. But I think it speaks loads of just how tought people are when they don't have to be accountable (or at least think they don't) for what they do. Still don't understand why anyone would buy a cellphone on a street corner.

Oh, I should have mentioned, the NYTimes article came out before the supposed arrest and return of the property. To read more about that, see Evan's updates on his website (near the bottom)...

A reporter from a local radio station went to the neighborhood to do an interview and it nearly sparked a riot. A bunch of natives gathered around him and one had a brick in their hand. Such nice people.
