cleaned up the system (reg mantainence) defragged the files and when restarted had no sound? Any advice? where do you go to turn it back on (if there is such a thing)? Thanks

I highly doubt the defrag had anything to do with it. Elaborate on "cleaned up the system (reg mantainence).." You may have removed something in startup that your soundcard needed. Check that you have the volume up in Windows and on your speakers and make sure you didn't accidentally kick loose any plugs down below.

Try checking out your drivers. Go to start, control panel, system. Then look for your device manager pane (usually on the front page) then click the "open device manager" button. This should bring up all the devices on your system. (Moniter, sound, display, etc.) Look at sound (or audio) and right click on it and go to properties. It will bring up another page and it should have the name of the driver, also it should say "device is working properly" if not there is a "troubleshoot" button on there also. At the bottom of the page there will be a section that should say "use this device" if it doesn't say that hit the arrow beside it and you should get the options to "use this device" or "shut down this device". See if that helps you. At least it will be a start.;)

This is how I switch between my added graphix card and the one that was in the computer when I bought it.

I tried everything you said there and all of them said they were working properly. One thing I didn't mention....before it would allow me to defragment the files, I had to do the "control, alt, delete" and shut everything down before it would defragment. have I shut something down that hasn't or won't start back on it's own? The speaks are on and the volume control that comes up in the lower right hand corner is there and turned up. HELP!

Never had to do anything before defragging here. I know this sounds stupid but when you click on your speaker icon and the pane comes up, the "mute" box isn't checked is it? Just a start. Also, is there a performance and maintenance area on your control panel? Check your audio area on the control panel. I'm grasping at straws here but it sounds to me like you just shut something off. It's there, you just got to find it.;)

I inadvertenly hit the mute key on the laptop PC once...drove me nuts, then I felt like a fool...

reinstall your audio driver... sometimes for some reason something gets glitched up and reinstalling the driver takes care of it.... just a thought

Try this:

start menu

programs

accessories

system tools

system information

under the tools heading

directx diagnostic tool

run all tests for kicks and giggles but of course it is the sound tests you are interested in.
