There is no way you could get yourself laid off. That guy could get fired, but you can't make yourself get laid off.

Lame video.

Give it time Marc...it will start...eventually. It took me a couple of minutes. Semi-amusing. I like what he did with the crayons.

You haven't worked for the right company, at the right time, Caymen. People made an "art form" of out being laid off from big companies like IBM, Kodak and Xerox in the late 80s and early 90s; back when those companies were giving out nice early-retirement packages.

If someone could somehow make it close to impossible to fire anyone without legal penalties, and then negotiate a huge raise, it would take away the incentive for the employees to work hard. This would create an inefficient work environment, since many people would do as little as possible, since there is no penalty. The company as a result would begin to lose money due to the high wages and low employee productivity. They would be forced to lay off personnel to cut costs.

I don't know if this scenario exists in real life, but just imagine how much damage it would do to our economy if this idea became reality and caught on nationwide.

Acting like that guy will get you fired, not layed off. There is a big difference.

If I acted like that at work, I would be fired. If I did not perform my job, I would get fired. If I were to break a safety rule, I would get fired. Not show up to work without calling in sick, I would get fired.

That guy is trying to get fired, not layed off. No severance, no nothing.

One man's humor is another man's waste of 2:53

Now I have to determine how to reclaim that time today. I guess I can cut my 15:00 crayon eating break to 12:07.

I used to think like Nelson when I was in the military...then I got into the real world and saw how companies really abuse their workers.

Thank God for unions!

Caymen, you said "There is no way you could get yourself laid off"...then I gave you some examples where I have seen people, through their attitude, skills upkeep and performance, work themselves into early-retirement and good severance packages with companies that were downsizing.

Sure, the film clip was absurd, but the premise not as absurd as one might think.

All reasons to get fired, not layed off. If at the same time your company is downsizing, the lay off was not completely caused by performance, but caused by downsizing.

Caymen says:

That's true almost all the time. The reasons for downsizing vary, but the major reason is to cut costs...and when that happens, you get rid of the people that are your least affordable (afforadability = value vs cost). So, if you deliberately reduce your value to a company during a time of downsizing, oh, not enough to be fired, but enough, then you increase your liklihood of being let go.

It happens all the time, in bigger companies.

I can tell you specific stories if you want to know them.

Amen brother! Not knocking those in the military, but being in the real world is a totally different ballgame then working in the military.

I was never a "gung ho" go union kind of guy. I was on the fence between the two. I have worked non-union and now I work union. There are positives and negatives in both. One thing I do like is being able to say "NO".

Non-union company:

Boss: Want to work this weekend?

Me: No thank you :)

Boss: Well you are scheduled.

Me: Sorry, I have a wedding to go to this weekend. :(

Boss: We really need you.

Me: I understand, but I have a wedding to go to. My cousin is getting married and I plan on going to the wedding. :(

Boss: Be here tomorrow for 12 hours. (He walks away)

Me:

Union company:

Boss: Want to work tomorrow?

Me: No thank you. :)

Boss: Thanks for your time. Have a nice weekend!

Me: See you monday. :D

Wait until Nelson gets into the real world. He is going to get a rude awakening.

A buddy of mine spent 8 years, or so, in the Marines. He was with Marine 1 (Presidential helicoptor) under the Clinton era. When he got out of the military, he was mr. Anti-union. He now works for a union company because he likes to have a life.

Sounds like Klinger trying for a "Section 8"!

There are good and bad, both Union and Management. As there are people in every

walk of life, any division, any personal experience.

To me, "Right to Work State" should read, "The Right for Management or any Big Shot

Business Owner, to take advantage of any or all of their employees, without regard to their

personal life, and be able to "Fire 'Em on the Spot!" for such acts as having a "Personal

Life" in the first place,State"!

Um...I believe Stalin and Lenin tried this many years ago!

Why do you think all of the foriegn companies are wanting to move down south, and

specificially to Tennessee? They are of a Communist Mind! The State controls everything!

We still need our Ron Gettlefingers and Lech Wvalesas, until Big Business Management

and Government realize that it is the hard working Lower and Middle Income Class-

type- people that run this country from the bottom, up, and make it as strong as it is!

Go Union!!!

Solidiarisnosc!!!!

:D
