check engine light came on and A.Z. diagnostic device code was P0193 fuel rail pressure sensor condition any thoughts about what to change first, fuel pressure pump, fuel regulator, fuel filter, fuel rail pressure sensor??

I'd start with checking the fuel pressure first. There is a Schraeder valve on the rail for attaching a gauge (check with auto parts store for tool rental or loan). If you've got no pressure but engine runs then it's the pressure sensor, an easy fix. If pressure is low then replace the fuel filter and recheck pressure. How many miles on this Trac, and when was fuel filter last changed? Fuel pump replacement is a big job - requires the tank to be dropped.

I think that's the code my daughter's Ford 500 is throwing, and from what I've read online the 1st thing to do is check the connections on the sensor on top of the fuel rail. The next step is to change the sensor. Supposedly that's usually what causes that code. If the connections or sensor are bad, resistance goes up and the car's computer thinks you have low fuel pressure. The wording of the description makes it sound like the fuel pressure is high at the fuel rail, but it's actually the resistance that's high, indicating low fuel pressure. Daughter's been driving with that code for 2 months with no problems. One day I'll get around to getting a new switch.

The '04 trac has no place to check rail pressure. Last year my '04 threw the same code a couple of times. I change the pressure sensor. All has been well since.

As Duane said, check the connector first. Also change the fuel filter if it has been 40K miles.

Gotta wave the BS flag Eddie. From looking at my Haynes manual and internet search it looks like there's a test port on Bank 1 (psgr side) fuel rail - which is where the fuel pressure sensor is located. Rock Auto has the Motorcraft sensor for $87. Before I'm spending that I'm going to verify the condition. A decent scan tool (think my Blue Driver can do this) would be an easier way to check fuel pressure. What do you do if you replace the sensor and CEL is still on with same code?

Tanya- how is the Trac running? My experience with clogged fuel filter is the high speed/high load conditions (like accelerating up a hill on the highway) suffer greatly. If the Trac is running well, I would probably gamble on a new sensor, after checking and cleaning the connections on the existing one.

Keep us informed - that is how we learn!

Thanks Steve, I knew for a fact the '04 has no test port.......

Vic, take the flag down,,,LOL......

Also I have no faith in Haynes manuals. They dont keep up with small changes. The info is very generic. I purchased the Ford manuals. Not to say I havent bought Haynes manuals. The difference is 98% of the time I know what Im doing. Dad handed me tools when I was 14 years old. Taught me how to trouble shoot and repair. Including motor rebuilding.

From that day on I have taught myself and built many cars. Iam getting tired of keeping up with all the electronic crap. I just found out my HD has throttle by wire.

Now that I patted myself on the back. I will most likely make a big boo boo...LOL

Eddie: Flag lowered mi amigo. All I'm sayin' is it's good to verify the condition before throwing parts. It may be that Ford deleted a fuel rail Schraeder valve on OP's Trac - but there's got to be a way to verify fuel pressure on these engines, even if you have to tee in somewhere. Me, I'm not throwing a $90 sensor when it may have been a $10 fuel filter all along. I already got that t-shirt...ha ha.

I just rented the gauge to check fuel pressure....couldnt find valve to connect...i pulled this up to ask and i see that there isnt one.... As to how it runs...every now and then it it briefly sputters while giving it gas. Its hard to tell anything happens...then this light and the code... Im feeling fuel filter...
