painting the bottom cladding

I want to paint the bottom cladding, or the gray part of my 2003 ST, how do you do this. I have heard that it is a pain.

I Used 3m plastic parts cleaner, then 3m adhesion promoter, then using pro body shop paint equipment, i applied PPG single stage gloss black, sanded between coats then final polished. Overall 4-5 coats of paint.... Took me almost a week, But It was worth it to me, and I do not have the texture showing..

Todd, how did you get the 'texture' out of the cladding? Is it just a build up of primer and sanding, or did you 'smooth' the cladding first?

Todd, when you sanded between the coats what coarseness (if that is a word) did you use.



I assume you wet sanded it???



I plan on doing this over the winter.

Scott, 04 and up it came as an option...

Bambu, I actually filled it with the coats of paint, I have 4-5 coats on there..... no sanding, you will destroy the plastic

Coastie, Yes, wet sanded with 600-800 between coats and used 1600 on the final coat and then polished with 3m polishing compound on a wheel...

It's really easy if you just want to have the Black Satin finish look to your Cladding. The Project I wrote up details everything pretty well. I did mine over 18 months ago and it still looks great.

If you want a Glossy clearcoated finish like the factory paint, take your ST to a professional paint shop unless you have the talent that Todd Z does with Glossy paint.

Scott, what i ment is the you can get the dark grey or the painted to match. they changed from the light grey to a dark in 04...
