Gotta toot my horn a little here...I passed the written test of the firefighter's test....Today I took the physical portion. It went linke this, put 50lbs on your back, pick up a length of fire hose (about 20 lbs), carry it up three flights of stairs, drop it, go back down; hit a weighted sled with a dead-blow sledge hammer and move it ~5 feet (VERY difficult, much harder then it sounds); extend the fly section of a two-piece ladder and retract it, twice (weighs about 40 lbs); pull a 15lbs weight down 25 times; crawl through a 3' colvert (slippery as crap), lift a 30lbs weight from 2' 6" to 3' 6" and back again; carry a pressurized hose 75 feet (I screwed up this part...didn't sling the hose as much as I should've), discahrge the hose the drop it; and finally drag a 175 lbs (at least) dummy 75 feet. You've got a 7 min time limit. My time wasn't too, too impressive at 5:01, but I paced myself so as to not burn out. The fastest time was 3:16 put up by a 40 year old British guy....lol. Hey, at least I passed. God willing, my interviewer's will find me favorable and recommend me, then I'll be a firefighter.

Way to go Tiger. Pretty much the same test we use for new recruits It's modeled after the firefighters challenge. Of course you will have to complete it in under 2:20 to qualify to compete at the World Championship.

Congrats. I was hired as a firefighter about three years ago and also went through all of the testing. Does your time count towards your ranking on the hiring list, or was it simply pass/fail. We used the CPAT test and we were ranked on written test and interview, but the physical was simply pass/fail. Congrat again. It's the best job in the world!

Tig: it was simply pass/fail...I think the written wasn't ranked either, because we were simply told if we passed or failed there as well, no score.

Under 2:20 for the World Championships? Shoot.....

Not yet, Bill....not yet.

Thanks for the kind words, trying to ride my high out as far as I can.

And you made a wise choice to pace yourself. Why hurry and risk an injury and then not pass?

I use the same strategy when hiking in the Grand Canyon. Hike for 1 hour, then rest for 10 minutes. You actually make better time than you do if you hike non-stop.

Congrats....

And what's wrong with a 40 yr old...even he is a Limey? I served in the desert last year with some super guys from England, BTW.

Congrats! That's a great accomplishment. Hopefully the recommendation and job will come soon.

lol, Not a thing Larry...he was a really cool guy and was in excellent physical shape. It's kinda ironic that the oldest guy there go the best time. He's a true Limey too, only recently moved to the States because his wife missed the sunshine of the good ol' USA.

Trav-I adore you no matter what you do...you are sexier now that you are almost a firefighter...still too young for me! whatever-I am truly happy for you. Maybe you should reconsider the penguin. ;)

they do not like fire

let us know how it works out
