I'm looking into getting a performance exhaust and was looking at the heart throb exhaust system... does anyone know anything about this if its good or bad and how is the tone ... at some point further down the road I would end up getting a catless y pipe and a high flow catalytic converter... what kind of horsepower and torque increase can I Possibly get with these modifications?

Unless there is something wrong with your OEM or you retune your engine to match the new exhaust you will probably see very little improvement if any. Well, unless your like the rice-rockets and confuse more noise with more power.

Before moving I had access to a dyno and we tried several "bolt on" modification to cars (not my ST) in the car club and none of them really made that much difference.

Yes, if you have 200K on your stock exhaust you may see some gain but you would also see some gain with a new OEM system.

but you would also see some gain with a new OEM system.

Explain that. In my 0ver 40 yrs of hotroding, and building performance, that makes no sense.

Their is always gain with the right, high flowing exhaust. I may not be as much as you want or advertised. with a tune you will get more. But a tune is not necesary to gain a few.

There are some good kits that arent that loud. they make as much power as the ones that are obnoxous. The SLP systems are obnoxous.

Never heard the hearthrob units. If it is the one that splits the pipe into. Two tail pipe mufflers. I suspect it will sound like glass paks. could sound like rice.

I used to have a 1989 Thunderbird SC that I bought new and it had a supercharged 3.8L V6. When it finally came time to replace the fuel pump after twenty years I decided that I might as well replace the exhaust with an aftermarket system at the same time because I had to drop the exhaust before I could drop the fuel tank (under the back seat) to get to the pump. Biggest mistake I ever made. I hated the sound of that car after installing a Flowmaster catback system and it totally changed the character of the car. Granted, that engine was a 90 degree V6 and the 4.0L is a 60 degree with I am guessing a different firing order but the quieter you can make a V6 the better as far as I'm concerned. Nothing beats the sound of a V8 and you just can't imitate that with two less cylinders.

as a "owner" of 3 tracs (02,04,07-V8) i had magnaflow exhausts on my 04 adren and 07 V8 limtd.

IMO, there was VERY minimal perf gains from them. it is more for a perf sound and on the 07 V8 it sounded awesome. again imo, ford V8's sound very good with a perf exhaust but dont expect any HP improvements fro the cost. just a better sound.

Sounds like you may have to remove the spare, if it's mounted under the truck.

Travis,

The spare can stay if oem. We had a member that put that system on. Maybe he will chime in.

Those are glass packs. One thing I do know is. Any car that has the glass packs at the end of the pipes. Do have a different sound than if they ae before the axle.

Not familiar with them on a V6. On a v8 the sound is quiet, compared to before the axle.

We all know what 4 banger rice sounds like though. That is all the coffee can mufflers are. The difference is the diameter of the coffee cans. Tends to make noise because of the resonance of a 4 banger.

I say it is your trac. Do as you like.

I have the magnaflow cat-back. With the RT y-pipe and oem main convertors. I had the tip cut and re-routed to the rear, with an oval tip. Reving in park the sound is not as good, but not obnoxous. In drive it has a deep throuty sound. Most of all no drone in the cab. Of course I have performance tunes from torrie. Im pleased with the sound and results.

As I said before, it is all about the right system for a V6.

I would not have used a flo-master on any car. They are loud and sound like marbles.

Its your money. Ignore the nay sayers. Do as you want.

i went with mangaflow and i have noticed more power. and it sounds great. and great thing with being near the ocean it is stainless steel. so no rust. in the long run do what u want but you did ask for advice. just my two cents.

Material makes no differanc eon the ST.....

I had the Magnaflow on my 04 and now on my 03..... Its not too bad, ITs a little "nasty" at high RPMS but i dont really do much of that any more..

I found a guy who had this on his trac and took it off and went the straight pipe route... and he said if I come get it I can have it for free... so why not right... the price is right IMO.
