A legend and great person. He was fun to listen to while the Yankees were playing. I loved how he would leave his partner hanging and be over the bridge to Jersey before the final out! He will be missed.

"This is Phil Rizzuto for the Money Store" is what I remember. Didn't know he was a ball player....wow.

Never got to see him play except for in old timers games but he was a great announcer. I remember watching Yankee games and listening to him growing up. Half the time he wasn't even talking about the game but it was great.

Godspeed Phil!

"Holy Cow, I think he's going to make it"!!!

Ok here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here, two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth, theres the wind-up, and there it is, a line shot up the middle, look at him go. This boy can really fly! He's rounding first and really turning it on now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna try for second; the ball is bobbled out in center, and here comes the throw, and what a throw! he's gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he's out! No, wait, safe - safe at second base, this kid really makes things happen out there. Batter steps up to the plate heres the pitch - he's going, and what a jump he's got, he's trying for third, heres the throw, it's in the dirt - safe at third! Holy cow, stolen base! He's taking a pretty big lead out there, almost daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher glances over, winds up, and it bunted, bunted down the third base line, the suicide squeeze is on! here he comes, squeeze play, its gonna be close, heres the throw, heres the play at the plate, holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!

Phil Rizzuto, the announcer who provides the play-by-play baseball commentary during the long spoken bridge in the song "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," actually describes the singer's efforts to lose his virginity. Rizzuto was reportedly unaware of the suggestive double entendre nature of his spoken contribution, and was initially annoyed by the song's success.

Hear Phil in this song:

He is a HOFer, won an MVP, has 7 World Series rings and his #10 is retired by the Yankees. As far as not knowing he was a player, I guess you could look at him and say, "what an every day Joe" and not know he was such an impact player for the Yankees.

Good article at http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070814&content_id=2147920&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy

The best way I can explain it is, "a piece of my youth was taken away today" as I grew up listening to Scooter call Yankees games on the radio as I was supposed to be going to sleep and of course once cable became available the Yankees games were mostly on WPIX. Life was good.

To describe him I will say he was part Harray Caray (ramblin' about things other than the game), part Larry King (name dropping and talking about his favorite Italian restaurants in NY) - but do not get me wrong, he was an original.

The Yankees used to bring Scooter into spring training just to show players how to bunt. The last I remember of this though, he ended up breaking his wrist - beats falling down at the old folks home!

Have to remember - at the request of the beautiful Mrs. Pete Sampras, Billy Madison (Adam Sandler) trying to write 'Rizzuto' in cursive on the chalk board.

he was great as a player and even better as a commentator

because of all the stories he could tell, not only about baseball

but life in general.

i had him sign a baseball card of his at a signing in burlington NJ

and asked that he personalize it to me "Rich"

he said oh if i do that it will never be worth anything.

i said its worth more to me to finally meet you and though

i never got to see you play you're one of my Hero's and it will

never be sold.

he shook my hand, thanked me for saying that and signed the card

To Rich " Holy Cow" Phil Rizzuto

i have many items signed by the scooter but that card is the

only one personalized and has a prominent spot in my wifes

curio cabinet

i will miss him.
