Greetings all. I am a US paratrooper currently deployed to Afghanistan. I am scheduled to relocate to Alabama this fall and will need to purchase a new vehicle for my wife and I since my old BMW is too old and not worth converting from European to US specs. The Sport Trac has caught my interest more than any other truck/SUV and is currently my most favored choice for a replacement.

Despite my initial interest in the ST, I would like to gather as much feed-back from current owners of the vehicle, to see how pleased or displeased they are with the Sport Trac's performance and reliability before I commit to buying one. I have already reviewed Consumer Reports (CR) evaluation of the ST and was surprised to discover that it only received an average rating over-all despite the large number of people who seem to be very pleased with their STs. The CR evaluation stated the Sport Trac had outstanding ergonomics and functionality, but also gave poor marks for fuel efficiency, handling, and having an "unrefined" engine which seemed underpowered at times.

Many actual ST owners who completed CR surveys about their STs were very pleased with it and mentioned it's ergonomics, versatility, and reliability as being key points of satisfaction. Others, however, said it was the worst vehicle they'd ever owned. Mechanical problems with fewer than 50,000 miles on the odometer were the most common reasons for these claims. Many stated they had experienced recurring and expensive problems with fuel pumps, wind and road noise, and leaky or defective drive-trains. These same people also claimed that the Ford diagnostic specialists at their Ford dealerships were often unable or very slow to identify and correct the problems and that the warranty on their vehicles wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.

I generally value Consumer Reports to be a safe, reliable, and trust-worthy source of consumer information on many products. They claim to be a non-profit source which doesn't seek commercial funding. Despite this, though, they seem to be heavily biased towards the Japanese auto industry. I know the Us auto market is suffering at this time, but I've always considered ford to be make a good truck. Before I make my decision, I'd like to hear from "real" people instead of a potentially fabricated magazine or internet article.

Please feel free to share your ST experiences, good or bad, with me. I am interested in hearing about any problems or regrets you've had with your ST, regardless of how small or trivial. Likewise, I'd like to know what features are your favorites and what impresses you most with your ST. Of particular concern to me, is fuel economy and drive-train reliability. I can deal with flimsy cup-holders or hard-to-reach seat belts so long as the major components are reliable. Also, as my wife is fairly short, I'd like to hear from a few of the ladies and "under-height" people to see if they have any problems getting in and out of the ST or driving it. Additionally, Ford claims the ST averages 17/21 mpg for city and highway driving, respectively. CR states an average annual fuel expense of around $900-$1000. I don't expect the St to compare with a Honda Civic for fuel economy, but I'd like to know if anyone agrees or disagrees with these numbers.

Again, I'm not trying to nickle-and-dime the Sport Trac. I think it is a great looking vehicle and think I'd like to own one. I have simply worked very hard for my money and want to make an informed decision about possibly owning one. I welcome your comments and opinions as they pertain to the Sport Trac, especially from '03 - '04 owners.

You will be very pleased with the vehicle. After a few minor upgrades you will be even more pleased: such as Intake,Tuner,Shocks,Sway Bar are the few that people change right away after purchasing. With these upgrades the ride and handling will be changed dramatically.

I shoot IDPA with a guy named Dave Crockett, hope you shoot as good as he does in light of your occupation. BTW....god bless you all over there....whatever god floats your boat. We appreciate your sacrifice.

2001 4wd, bought new, 43k miles, never had a serious problem, just an EGR valve under warranty.

Love this truck, have two small boys so the full back seats and four door are perfect. MPG is as advertised. Bed is small but that is what I wanted, soft top on it, may get the topper for the dog and ease of storing and retreiving gear. I'm pretty short, but have no problems getting in or out even with the queer looking running boards taken off. (IMHO)

I would buy another without hesitation!!!!

I was Air Assualt.....OOOO RAH!

Dave, You can do a sear of this site on "reliability". Keep in mind that most of the posts on this site are in the minority as far as major problems are concerned. Also, keep in mind that the ST is a truck and needs to be driven as such. We have an '01 manual 5 speed, and the only major issue we have had is the master cylindar has had to be replaced a couple of times. I personally have talked to non-myst'ers with no problems with their ST's, and plan to keep them for many yrs. Also, if you keep any vehicle well maintained it will serve you well. With that said a number of people here, including myself, look to make a good vehicle better. And, there's several people here that just want to customize it to there liking by either lowering, lifting, and / or improving/ugrading the sound. You will get very good & reliable advice from this site. :D

Hello Dave, and welcome to the site!

I own a 2001 4 wd ST with 74k on it. I've owned Ford pick ups for MANY years, and the ST is THE most versatile truck I've owned! I'm quite happy with it.

Of course, coming to this site, you will probably find us SLIGHTLY biased in favor of our rigs...

While being a good, versatile truck, the ST does have it's drawbacks. Yes, it's a heavy truck (4600 lbs) with a V-6, so if you're towing stuff, it can be underpowered. Gas mileage DOES suck, especially city driving. (@16 mpg city) A new Explorer Express rear sway bar & new shock upgrade is highly recommeded, as the stock set up is too 'soft', and this change will greatly improve the ride & handling characteristics, while helping to reduce the roll over risk. As far as the drivetrain goes, I had my driveshaft replaced by Ford under a TSB because of vibration, which I felt once a year while driving down to Long Beach on I-5. I've also had to replce the front differental seal because of leaking, and my lower front ball joints went out.

So, while my rig hasn't been completely problem free, I still enjoy it a lot, and am not thinking about replacing it anytime soon.

And Dave, Thank you for your service to this country! Stay safe!

First off, Welcome and thank you for the work you are doing overseas.

I purchased m Trac in the end of June 2002. Since then, I have put on 54,000 miles. I did have some items replaced under warranty, but all has been paid for by Ford. My dealer fixes it right the first time. Never had a problem with the service department.

I have no regrets about getting my Trac. When we had a really bad snow fall last winter, for about 30 seconds, I wished I had goten a 4x4. That would/could be my only real regret with my Trac. Another could be the "Pioneer Edition" Trac. When I ordered my Trac, there was nothing about the Pioneer Edition. Right after my vehicle was confirmed, Ford released info about the Pioneer Edition. By then, it was too late to change my order.

Ford has thier heads in the dirt when it comes to offering colors. I hated having to settle for a color instead of choosing a color I liked. I settled for the color I hated the least.

With that being said, I have used and abused my Trac more times then I care to mention. Overloading the bed, overloading a trailer, driving the crap out of it. I do take care of my vehicles, but I am not easy with them.

I have never had a fuel pump fail (Something we never have heard anything about), Tranny fail (Some here have, most haven't), engie fail (I don't remember any here that have).

As for wind noise, I don't notice any. I also know that our Trac's have the aerodynamics of a shoebox, so some noise is expected. I don't find it annoying, loud, or anything else.

The best thing I can recomend is test drive one. You might want to talk to your dealer about an extended test drive. Something like over a weekend. That will give you a better feel for the vehicle.

If interested, many members, including myself, are more then willing to sponsor you with an X-Plan PIN, if needed.

Good luck with your decision.

Here are some things I have done with my Trac.

[Broken External Image]:

The infamous "Turkey Picture".

[Broken External Image]:

One yard of topsoil ~2500 LBS.

[Broken External Image]:

24' Scaffolding plank on the top of my Trac.

[Broken External Image]:

Load of junk to the scrap yard.

As you can see, I have used the Trac in ways I never imagined I could do. I would not trade that vehicle for almost any vehicle out there.

Welcome to the site Dave. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND STAY SAFE. Regarding the ST, you are doing the right thing, touching base with this site before actually getting one. I joined in October '04 and got my ST in Feb '05. Influenced by my daily visits here, I learned the pros and cons of owning one plus I was able assess the acceptability of known common problems, which to me seems minor. GOOD LUCK on your ST decision. Wherever you are, GOD BLESS.

Have had my ST for 3-1/2 years and still loving it. It's the perfect vehicle for me. Not to small and not to large. Made several improvements that helped the handling and performance of the vehicle. None of them cost that much. I would say 15-20 mpg is more accurate. Nothing great but average for trucks.

D@#N! You people respond fast! Thanks for the insight.

Tim R: I'm not a bad shot. I can regularly put 38-40 out of 40 at 300 meters with a stock M-4 shooting iron sights only and GI issue ball ammo. More than one Hajji has met his demise thanks to my Fulton Armory M14, which DOES NOT shoot the cheap Gvmt Issue, but rather 77 grn HPBT and is fitted with a Leopold variable power scope. I'll keep in mind what you said, and will forgive you for that weak Air Assault commentary (j/k).

Rodger & Georgia: Did you install the 5spd manual or did it come from ford that way? As far as I know ( and I admit to being the cherry here), the newer STs only come with the automatic, right? I think a manual would be far more to my liking and more efficient. I agree with you on the maintenance thing. My old man had one of the original Ford Explorers (the actual pick-up version...I think it was an '82 maybe), which he put close to 400,000 on over the course of 20 years. He doesn't drive it much anymore, except down the lane to get the mail, but that truck was a tribute to what good maintenance can do for the life of a truck. I have done most of my oil changes and routine maintenance myself on my '91 BMW 5 series which I bought as a "beater" when I first moved to Italy in '99. I had to replace the radiator and a few out-put seals on the rear diff and xmsn, but it never failed me or left me stranded throughout my travels through Europe. I hate to leave that old car, because she has been great, but it really isn't practical in the US. I just hope the ST proves to be as reliable and trustworthy. Those krauts sure make a nice car!

KUD 50 and Krash: If I intend to get an ST, what mods should I begin with first? The suspension seems to be a continual point of "dislike" for all ST owners. What would be a reasonable amount of $'s to expect to pay to get my suspension up to par ? Does the roll-over problem exist only with the 4x2 model? I've also done suspension work on my BMW, so I would hope to be able to save a few bucks by doing it myself on an ST, potentially. I don't plan on doing anything dramatic to the ST if I get one....maybe a few cosmetic things. A billet grill looks nice on some ST owners rides, and I like a few of the after-market wheels and paint jobs a few have applied as well. The dash-mat that is recommended on this site seems like a solid investment. The ST community seems to be torn over the benefit of after-market air filter kits, such as those produced by K&N. I know K&N makes great products b/c they've helped put a few exrtra ponies in my old BMW that I keep mentioning, as well as my 2002 Ducati Monster. I have just noticed a few ST owners who have complained after installing an after-market filter/induction kit, because they didn't get any noticeable HP or MPG gain or they noticed a "whistling" noise from under the hood..... Also, is the bed-liner removable? I like the spray-in bed coatings better than plastic ones, because you avoid getting watter between the bed and liner.

Also, to anyone: How difficult is changing the oil filter, xmsn oil, and conducting routine maintenance? What about belts? Ford is notorious for having super-complex serpentine belt configurations. I hate paying other people to do such a simple (?) task. Is there enough engine room under the hood to get in there to do what you need to do?

I know these seem like assinine questions, but as we don't have a "Al-Qeada Family Ford, Lincoln, & Mercury" dealer around here, I am relying on the input from you guys to see if I want to invest in an ST. The comments ya'll have provided (and in lightning quick fashion!) are much appreciated.

DD, man of a thousand ?'s

Dave,

I think you'll like it. I have a 2001 4x4 with over 83,000 miles on it and have never had to do anything major. Just general maintenace. Now don't get wrong, sometimes a defect or 2 shows up in these trucks. You'll get that with anything you buy. But over all, I think the Sport Trac is a great truck. I have had mine for a few years now and I beat the living hell out it. I am very hard on vehicles and my ST has been took the abuse better than any vehicle I have ever owned.

HOOO-RAAAH!

I have a 2001 Sport Trac that just passed 98,000. I have had no problems with it. I tow a boat back and forth to the lake in the summer, which slows it down a bit, but it otherwise runs really well. I just put new tires on it, so it rolls even better.

Keep up on the maintenance, and it will treat you well. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil, I flush the radiator and the tranny every 30,000. I replaced the fuel filter at 50000 miles and had the plugs and wires replaced at 90000 miles.

It seems like it eats brake pads every year to 18 months. On the upside, they are easy to replace yourself.

Keep your head down over there so that you can come back and get a new Trac.

Later,

The Hawk

Alright i'm gonna knock on wood after i type this, but as far as reliability goes, mine has been great, its an 02 with now 63,000 miles, and i have never had to get it serviced except for things that i have goofed up. It's been a very reliable vehicle, probably the best in my family (i come from a family of gm owners). As far as upgrades, i have quite a few, but they were just for my own driving pleasure, suspension and performance upgrades, it is quite a fun vehicle to drive. It's very versatile as i use it as a truck probably 3-4 times a week, and having 4 doors its always the choice vehicle of my friends for roadtrips etc. very comfortable and not TOO bad on gas. I highly recommend the vehicle if your looking for one, the only other i would consider right now is waiting for the 07' model to come out, which i still would have to have a good look at to consider. Hope I helped.

Welcome Dave and thanks for your service as well. I'm a fairly new owner of a 10-month old ST. Love my vehicle, mpg as advertised, extremely versatile, no problems so far. Some noise, but not very noticeable unless it's a very windy day and usually my music at low to moderate level drowns out any noise anyway. Plus I've been soundproofing my doors and will do the floors soon for both my audio system and to make the cab as quiet as possible.

I've upgraded the shocks but haven't done the sway bar and have noticed a vast improvement in ride. Other upgrades inlcude K&N intake kit, bug shield, vent visors, nerf bars (think they look good on the ST myself), bug shield, Advance tonneau cover (awesome addition), and have been gradually upgrading my interior audio system. Next will be a dual catback system I think. You'll love your ST and, just as I was warned when I joined this site, be careful with your wallet because there's so many mods available for this truck and just checking out the member mods makes you want to tinker with your truck. It's all good though and you'll enjoy the great members of this site.

I have to go catch some rack-time. Thanks for all of the responses. I didn't expect to get so much feed-back in such a timely manner! This is a really active web-site apparently. I'll check back in about 12 or 14 hours. Thanks for the support and concern to those of you who posted support messages. My job isn't as tough or exciting as it was in Iraq in 2003, but I appreciate your sentiments all the same! Rest assured, you are getting your tax-payer's $$$$-worth out of the 173rd Airborne Brigade......we kill more bad-guys than cancer!!

AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!!!!

Dave, Ours came w/ the 5 spd. manual, but it is not offered any more. You could probably get one from a auto recycler (coastiejoe on this site), and adapt it if that is a burning desire.

I will upgraded our profile with new stuff that I will be adding tomorrow.

Right now would be a good time to get a new ST with the Ford incentives. But, the new '06 model I have read here is going to be built on the newer ('02 +) Explorer frame which is 3" wider.

Dave- I am on my second ST- traded blue for yellow- and have had 1 failure- power mirror motor, under warranty. I compare that with my wife's $55,00 Lexus GX470- driveshaft replaced due to constant drivetrain clunk, fix didn't work, Lexus is now gone. ST is quick enough and cruises smoothly, bed is versatile and durable. You will enjoy it.

I ordered mine through military car sales. Has been a great vehicle. I owuld definitely change out the sway bar and shocks upon purchase (or maybe before 10k miles) Great vehicle with alot of uses. Keep up the fight.

No problems so far ('02 with 32k miles).

MPG not that great, not that bad (I get about 18mpg mixed city/hwy), but it sucked the first 10k miles (13mpg).

Wifey is 5'4" and she drives the ST with no problems, gets in & out easily (We have running boards).

Overall, we are VERY HAPPY with the ST, if we ever need to replace it, it will be with another ST.

There have been complains about the reliability, but you are more likely to hear complains that praise on any vehicle I guess... There's always a bad apple in the basket, and someone will get it.

Do I recommend it?

Definitely yes.

Mine has 55k on it, no out of the routine maintenance required. As for the oil, xmsn, and other stuff, all is fairly easy to do, some have issues with the spark plugs, they are a pain in the butt, but that is pretty common on alot of new vehicles. I love my ST and would recomend one to anyone.

Thanks for your work over there. I just returned from that area, and my son is over that way now, but we did our deeds (or were standing by to do them) from the water with those wonderful cruise missiles. Stay safe!!
