Part # J W Whitney 81rx4128x Ford F-150 tail gate electric lock
<P>
Tools = t-30 torx wrench, wire cutters, wire crimper, 7/16 nut driver or socket wrench

image001.jpg

Remove six torx screws from the inside panel of tailgate inner liner. Unsnap the four plastic snaps on the bottom of the tailgate inner liner to expose the locking mechanism.

Remove or unclip the scissor link rod ends from the green plastic clips. Push through the rod guides. This will give you added room to work.

Using a 7/16 socket or nut driver remove the two mounting bolts that hold on the tailgate outside lever. Be sure to hold the lever as it will fall to the ground. This is also to clean the wax build up from the area too.

Place the new electric lock mechanism on the passenger side of the internal manual locking device as shown. Test the lock using a key. If the lock causes a loud click while using a key you must bend the gold bracket away form the Ford locking mechanism or place a few small washers under the gold J. C. Whitney bracket. If not, the lock will bind and not work properly.

Pull up with your fingers the passenger side plastic trim piece running from the back door to the front door and set it aside. Expose the wiring harness next to the rear seat and carefully pull it up a few inches. There is a rubber plug that allows you to run the wiring to the tailgate. Make an X split in this plug and run the J. C. Whitney LONG wiring harness through this split.

Using a clothes hanger or metal fish tape you must pull the SMALL electric lock mechanism wiring harness to the bottom of the tailgate. I used the far right hand vent hole located at the bottom of the tailgate. Remember to secure the truck end or LARGE harness where the two harness meet. The tailgate must be able to be removed at some later date in life.

Pull the LARGE harness through the underside of the frame of the ST and fasten it using the wire ties that come with the kit. Note, be sure the muffler and tail pipe are not HOT!

Using the kit pieces attach a blue connector to the PINK with ORANGE stripe wire (the unlock wire) and another to the PINK with BLACK stripe (the lock wire) as you see here. You will find that your LONG wiring harness is about 12 feet too long and you can trim it down. Be sure to leave about a foot of slack for future movement. Using the two red wire connectors that come with the kit crimp them to the cut and stripped wire ends.

Plug all the wire connectors and test the operation of the lock. If it is backwards just reverse the wire connectors anywhere.
