I saw that same commercial last night. Not too worried about the insides of the filter and its inner end-cap if the mesh of the filters are all made the same...but that's just me.
I've been changing my own oil for years now, and just this last change it cost me 2x the oil. Seems the rubber seal of the old oil filter came off and stayed on the engine block and I didn't notice it (stupid Chrysler...can't see anything up under that car) and when I got all done and fired her up, she ran fine and I was about to stop her and check for leaks when I heard a nice whirring metal on metal sound and shut her down quickly.
Half of the new oil all over the floor. Thought I had a bad oil filter, but alas, just a bad technician (me).
Cleaned her up, got the filter off, saw the old seal and the new one after I took the new filter off, drained the rest of the oil (probably didn't need to...but I like knowing EXACTLY how much is in there), put the new (used for a few revolutions) oil filter back on, and refilled with new oil, all has been good since and have driven a couple of weeks.
Oh well... gotta focus on the details.
P.S. I always put a little "new oil" on the seal of the filter before applying, and always fill the filter before installing.
