Rear Differential Axle Assembly

Any ever heard of having to replace this. I have an 01 ST with about 55K miles. I have never been 4 wheeling and drive mostly on the highway. Any suggestions on what could have caused this.

Also shouldn't this be covered under a powertrain warranty???
