My son's friend has a 2001 Mazda B(something, Ranger ) 4x4 extended cab pickup with the 4l engine. At around 2000 rpm there is a noise from the rear end, not a wheel bearing sound, more of a tingy noise, but definately metal sound like something is loose???

I took off plud, no unusual shavings, just fine black stuff you normally find, fluid was up but pretty dark but didn't smell burnt. Drive shaft seems solid, no play at either end.

The noise holds at around the 2000 rpm mark when cruising or under load at acceleration, above that mark the sound dosen't seem as load or noticable.

Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks Gavin, I'll have him try it in park/neutral and see if it makes the same noise. I hope it is something simple like that for his sake.

You can here one of the Cat heat deflectors vibrate from time to time but that is a different noise as well and not from the back of the truck.
