found one just like Rose's HP for 179$ but it's refurbished. Should I stay away from such things and just buy new for 299$? opinions

As long as it's a factory refurb it falls under the same warranty as a new one.. So I'd do it if I was in the market.

JD, not always so... We just bought a refurbished HP laptop, and it has a 90 day warranty on it. I know that Sony refurbished units also have a 90 day warranty.

I have no problem purchasing manufacturer refurbished and have saved a bunch of money. However I will never again purchase third party refurbished or whatever its called. A few bad experiences and not one good experience.

I have seen it both ways. In many cases, they do carry the same coverage as new. When that is the case, then absolutely go for it...

BYW,, the form we did. When I first built it I did it in Excel 2007, but the one you have now is fully compatible from the 1997 version and newer...

LaRue,

Refurbished is not a bad deal if they give you a good warranty. I have bought several refurbished items and had good luck with them. Unfortunately, many refurbished electronic equipment only has a 90 day warranty.

If you are interested, TigerDirect.com has a NEW ASUS 10.1" netbook on sale for only $219 with a one year warranty.

I have 29 years in IT - I have purchased $millions in equipment - I buy manufacturer re-furbs for my wife and kids - no problem.

Asus is fine. A good company.

Nothing wrong with refurbished. I'm always buying refurbished stuff. There's lots of deals these days on netbooks. Check the OS. Some still are running XP or Vista.

LaRue,

Yes, ASUS is a reputable company more famous for making excellent PC motherboards.

Most refurbished netbooks will come with the older XP Home edition (Never seen one with Vista ?). Newer models will come with Windows-7 Starter edition which is not that great nor is XP home. I upgraded my Acer netbook to XP-Professional and even added Office-2007 Professional as well. I even upgraded the battery so that I get nearly 8 hours use on a full charge. I flew to Hawaii last year and used the computer during most of the 2 flights from Dallas to Kona, and still had plenty of power when I got there.

They are great for traveling or any kind of mobil use. I like the built in WiFi and media memory card slots. I have an 8GB SDCard for my camera which holds over 400 phots, and I can easily transfer them to the netbook on a daily basis and do not have to carry extra camera data cables. Of course there is no CD or DVD drive, but I have a small USB DVD-RW drive that works great when I need to load software.

Mine is an earlier Acer with the 8.9" screen and I would like to have the newer 10,1" screen models, but 1.2" bigger is not enough of a motivator to pay another $200+, since I don't use it that much except when traveling. I occasionally use it with my home WiFi just so I don't have to go to the other room to use my main PC.
