Do I use regular 80W90 gear oil in my Gen 1 front differential or do I use synthetic (like the rear differential)?

Royal Purpler, a make of premium synthetic lubricants did a test a few years ago where the changed all the fluids in a vehicle to 100% Synthetic and improved gas mileage and dyno'd an additional 8 HP at the rear wheels...all claimed to be due to reduced friction.

I firmly believe that synthetic are the way to go for most people and most vehicles.

My fourth oil change with this stuff. (Valvoline Synpower)

A premium full synthetic for less than conventional dino.

I've posted an article on synthetic motor oils in the Project section. You can use our Online Lookup routine on my website to see what Ford specifies, filters, quantities, etc. All AMSOIL products available at wholesale cost by using our Preferred Customer program.

The gen1 ST is Full synthetic .... I have the Amsoil in my st.... The Royal purple was TOO thin for me it went in like water !!

Also Amsoil sells the COOLEST bottle pump EVER !!!! Vic, you should post more info on that !!! Its like $12 bucks and works better then any thing i have ever used. Buddy's of mine that own shops use this pump for everything now !!!!

This independent lab test convinced me to use Amsoil SG.

Here's a link for the inexpensive bottle pump we sell:

It fits the quart, gallon and 2.5 gallon containers.

$11.10 Retail, $9.95 Wholesale through our Preferred Customer program.

Get this. My independent garage said they'd suck and refill the front differential and transfer case for $102. That's cheaper than the Valvoline Instant Oil Change place quoted.

I just spent $40 on fluid for the transfer case alone. Is that synthetic Mark?

Transfer case takes Mercon automatic transmission fluid. Front differential takes 80W90 synthetic.

Putting Mobil 1 ATF in the transfer case. Going Amsoil for the differentials. Thinking 75W-140 rear and 75W-90 for the front. Any problems with that?

Hugh - how much ATF for the transfer case did you buy? 2002 Gen1 transfer case shows capacity of 2.8 pints, not quite a quart and a half. AMSOIL Multi-Vehicle ATF retails for $11.50 a quart, $8.90 a quart through Preferred Customer program.

Ford says 80W-90 for All Temps in front differential, but 75W-90 is perfectly acceptable. Ford wants 75W-140 synthetic in the rear differential. You can see our offerings for your truck by using our Online Lookup guide that you'll find on my website.

I got 2 quarts for the transfer case, since they came in 1 quart bottles. I got Mobil 1, sorry. I am ordering from you for the differentials and future fluids needs, though. Thanks!

Here's an inexpensive tool that will help you service your differentials:

Our best gear lube is the Severe Gear line. Comes in 75W-90, 75W-110 and 75W-140. Service life on all is 100K Normal, 50K Severe. I'm running the 75W-110 in my 07 2WD Gen2 - looking for marginally better gas mileage, and I don't tow. I may even go to 75W-90 with no concerns. The Severe Gear is that good.

Forgot to mention - this pump comes with 3 different "straws" for use on quarts, gallon and 2.5 gallon jugs. Cost is $11.10 retail, $9.95 wholesale by using Preferred Customer program.

Thanks, that was on the list as well as the Severe Gear. I was surprised that it's cheaper than getting the inferior Royal Purple or Mobil 1 off the shelf at my local parts place. Still gotta see what shipping is, but I'm sure it's not a deal breaker. Won't be ordering until next week.
