Does removing the resonator increase noise coming from the exhaust? and if so how can you remove it? could it be a DIY with some simple tools?

i guess it depends on what you consider simple tools 
. but it would need to be cut out and replaced with a new piece of pipe. welded or clamped.

how long does the pipe have to be? and diameter size?
From the engine the pipe starts out at 3" then out of the resonator it goes to a 2.5"

Mike, you have an '01. your resonator is up over the rear axle. The easiest for you is let a shop cut and weld in a pipe.
