I use it and change it every 3K, No I don't have to but I still do....

My gear boxes and t-case will go the 60K miles, Ford says 100K ,but not me...

3k on RP here, just switched over from Mobil1 SuperSyn, and it's a world of difference.

Putting in the gear oil soon!

clo650,

IMO, it is a crap shoot. They are each as good as the other. Those that sell Amsoil is its own worst enemy. My Dad is an Amsoil salesman. It gets old fast...really fast.

It is up to you on what to use. I get mine for free, but if you can get one easier than the other, go for the one easiest to get...or cheapest.

I do it to keep peace in the house.

lol Caymen. I get my oil for free too. So I am gonna have a hard time forking out money for Synthetic Oil!!! I may just stick with regular ole 5W30 cuz it's FREE I also can't see myself going over 3000 miles on a oil change. I know people do it all the time but I am an auto tech. & 3000 mile intervals are pretty much stamped into my brain.

clo650, I do understand where your thinking is at on the oil. I used to change mine every 3-5k with dino oil, but once you switch to synthetic oil you'll never go back. I won't say the difference is night and day, but you definately will notice it. Do some research on synthetic oil with an open mind, and you'll see what we are talking about. I was sceptical at first too, but once I tried it in the engine the difference was definately noticable; it ran smoother, quieter and accelerated easier.

I use Amsoil and haven't changed my oil for almost a year now (I change the filter every 3-5k and top it off) and I still averagealmost 18.5-19 with mixed in-town & highway driving. The oil costs more but I beleive that in the long run, between longer change intervals, good gas mileage & less wear on the mechanicals, I am saving money. Not to mention using less oil thus having less neg impact on the enviroment.

I change my oil and filter once a year. I do nothing between changes.

I do not care about the mileage either. 10,000 miles, 20,000 miles. Who cares. Once a year.

On my Escort GT, I have had it for 5 years and I changed the oil once since I had it. Yup, 1 time, and I think it was 4 years ago. The only reason I changed it at that time is because it ticked when I started it and the culpret was a Fram oil filter. Put another brand on it, and it hasn't ticked since.

I use Amsoil filter in my Trac. For my Escort, anything that isn't Fram or made by Fram.

Ford makes/markets a semi-synthetic oil. You can buy it at Wal-mart for about $2 a quart. I was using Mobil 1; I can't tell any difference.......

I have sent used oil from several cars to a lab. Over 5000 miles I found no difference in wear metals between Motorcraft Blend and regular Mobil 1.

For whatever reason, the used oil analysis (UOA) I got from Mobil 1 Truck & SUV was awful. Wear metals were through the freaking roof.

I use syn or blend and change at 5000 miles. On my dad's Cadillac we go 10 to 12k but it holds 7.5 quarts and the UOA's come back fine.

I use Motorcraft filters. Right now using Motorcraft oil.

The absolute best UOA's I've gotten on my truck and the wife's car were with Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30, although obviously I haven't tested every oil there is.

I don't get into arguments about oil any more. I just tell people to run what they want for as long as they want and get UOA's.

A UOA is the only way to know for sure. Anything else is just speculation. Blackstone Labs, about $22.00.

I'm with Caymen - at least with the wifes car. Dec 1 it will be 4 years old and the oil has been changed twice. First time at 2750 miles because that's what the book said and the next and last time was about two years ago. I guess I need to get that done sometime soon :lol:

I've used Mobil 1 and K&N Oil Filters. I change the oil every 5k and the filter every 10k.

I don't know if there is a difference in the way it runs, as I gave it it's first oil change with 1000 miles on it, and have been using the above for the last 117k.

JohnnyO, I'm curious as to the UOA on Royal Purple and Amsoil. What is the address of the lab you send your sample to? What do you put the sample in? How much does it cost to run the sample? Thanks.

Below is from Royal Purple's web site (I feel they have no reason to be biased on this because the figure stand by themselves).

1 Film Strength based on comparison of leading 5W30 vs. Royal Purple® 5W30 Motor Oil in Falex No. 1 "high pressure" test. (Scar widths mm. Leading 5W30 motor oil: 5.9 mm - scored; Royal Purple® 5W30 Motor Oil: 1.4 mm - polished.)

2 Oxidation life based on U.S. Bureau of Standards TFOUT oxidation test (leading synthetic 5W30 motor oil - 409 minutes; leading 5W30 mineral oil - 246 minutes; Royal Purple® 5W30 - 1300 minutes.)

3 Terminology:

CO = Carbon Monoxide (a poisonous gas);

HC = Hydrocarbons (unburned fuel - normally occurs when fuel to oxygen mixture is too rich);

NO2 = Nitrous Oxide (cited as a contributor to smog, ozone, acid rain and regional haze and is exacerbated by the elevated combustion temperatures of “lean burn” engines where more oxygen exists than is needed to completely burn the fuel); HP = Horsepower; CO and NO2 are typically on polar opposites. When one increases, the other decreases;

4 Fuel and horsepower tests performed on 1996 Peterbilt truck with Caterpillar C-12 engine. Emission testing performed on Detroit Series 60 and Caterpillar 3176B engines.

Roger. He's talking about Blackstone Labs. I just recently sent off for a sampling kit from them. The kits feee, the sampling is $22.50

I've heard a lot of good things about them.
