What is the most cost effective way to do this, and what does it typically run? Hugh has this question posted under a different topic, but I was afraid the question might not get too many reads. I have an interest in finding out the answer myself.

Just a repost in the general board. Kinda thinking it might make it cost prohibitive but worth asking anyone familiar with shipping big items.

Cost to ship four 16" tires with wheels (significantly smaller than for an ST) was about $110, from Indiana to Iowa, by UPS ground.

That was when I bought tires already mounted on wheels from TireRack.

The packaging is merely a circular cardboard disk on each side, and tape. That's if the tire is mounted on a wheel. If it's just a tire, they just tape the shipping label directly to the tire.

I'd suggest that you estimate the weight and shipping cost for your case by pretending to start an order at TireRack.
