My father-in-law is a gunsmith. He shoots all the time to test the guns that he works on. He just put a scope on my AK-47 and we went to the range to sight it in and he brought and old cheep set of ear muffs. They looked liked they came off his record player with out the cord. (I will explane a record player later.....) I want to get him a good set of head phones for shooting that are automatic and he can hear talking till a gun is fired. There are many to choose from that I have looked up.Just would like information from people that have used them and which are recomnded. Oh, he doesn't hunt just shoots. Thanks all!

I wear the little foam ones and they work fine for me. If you get him the headphone style, you might consider the ones with an indentation on the outside of the muff. This is so they do not interfere with the gun stock when shouldered. I'll look for a link.

Something like this...

That is all I use at the range, meaning auto-cutoff style.

I was injured in the military and lost some hearing. I found that while at the range, I could not hear the commands with the muffs on. So I bought a pair of auto muffs and NEVER went back.

I like them as you can have a normal conversation and yet shoot with no issues.

I have had three thus far. One set lasted five years and I just wanted to update them to a new model. The second set, (which I have now replaced) were given to a co-worker after he tired them out.

Basically, look at traditional muffs and make a not of the level of decibels they protect to. Then look at the auto style and make sure they protect to the same level.

Some are adjustable as far as the amplified aspect, some are not. I found the adjustable versions to be more enjoyable. Often, if there is a lot of shooting or loud fans going on, turning down the volume helped a bit for over-all performance.

The pair I presently have were $89.00 on sale, normally like $100 to $120 for a decent set.

I now also use the foamies as well due to how often I shoot. Just trying to keep my hearing for the later part of my life.

I shoot once every 2 weeks and will shoot 500 rounds on average.

i bought a set from cabela's - electronic. you can hear perfectly fine with them on just as if you were wearing nothing. you can actually amplify sound as i was able to hear what my friend was saying in a whisper voice from a distance. once sound goes over 65 or 85 dB, noise is canceled out. they are sweeeeet. i think i paid 35 bucks.

Here is a good deal, but as I noted, compare the decibels with others..

Caldwell E-MAX Low Profile Electronic Earmuffs (NRR 23dB) Green

Normally $37.99, on sale for $17.99

I had some custom ear plugs made for riding and shooting, they are super comfortable and do an amazing job. The lady that did them for me had the option to add the switching filter.

Something similar to this link

I still use the ones I got when I was in the Army...15 years ago...now granted there were many years where they did not get used at all. But they have held up very well so I will still use them.

Here's a set I got from Cabela's(I got the stereo set). They're around 40 dollars and I have had them for a year and no complaints. It's nice to be able to hear conversations but not the gunfire! Much better than ear plugs IMO.

Hear and Protect Electronic Stereo Hearing Muffs

Same great hearing protection of the Hear and Protect Electronic Muffs, but with a microphone on each ear for a more natural and normal hearing situation when hunting. Color: Hunter Green. Item: 9IS-228957

$39.99

Fire two shots without plugs. Use the empty casings for plugs. No noise, you look cool to your redneck buddies, and as a plus you get you yearly dose of lead poisoning.

Sucks- wife pointed out that she can hear the high-pitched chirping of the alarm clock across the house and I can't hear it in the same room.

Sucks to get old and have a history of working in loud environments.
