Tonight, Theresa and I went to see Sicko. If you have not heard of the movie, it was written, directed, and filmed by Michael Moore. He irritates me. Though, I respect him for standing up for what he believes and is not afraid to do so. That is what being an American is all about.

Your thoughts?

ONLY PEOPLE THAT HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE ARE WELCOMED TO COMMENT! No armchair quarterbacks are welcomed to comment on something they have yet to see. If you want to comment, spend the 8 bucks to watch it in the theatres, or download it off the internet.

Michael Moore supports internet file sharing, so go get it.

Tom

I am commenting on the "internet download" comment....

the movie studio thinks otherwise and has put many copies of crap out there.....ecareful when downloading this movie.

I went to the theatre to watch it. I do agree with you on internet downloading it, though.

Tom

Finally watched my downloaded movie.

First thing I noticed, Canada's population is about 1/10 of the US population, and France is about 1/5. I think if you're going to compare the systems in different countries, they need to be of comparable size and population. It would be considerably easier to care for a pop. that is 10-20% of the size of the US pop.

Drug research costs money. For every miracle drug that works, there are dozens that don't work, and the researchers need to be paid for their services. Once the hard work is done, I'm sure it's not hard for someone to steal or reverse engineer the drug combo, and sell it for much less b/c they don't have to pay the research costs.

On Cuba, the only thing I will ask is, if it's so great, why are they risking their lives to get here on inflatable rafts and cars turned boats. Oh, and the inhaler costs about $.65, not $.05

Why is death such a bad thing? At what point do you say that it's not worth the cost to save someone's life? A bone marrow transplant can cost $100,000 to $250,000. I didn't see them taking people who can't afford BMTs to Canada or Cuba...why? You know why brain surgery costs so much money? Years and years and years of school, and malpractice insurance. People here want the best, but if you mess up, it'll cost you. I don't remember Michael Moore attacking ambulance chasers or the court system, which is a big reason of high health care costs.

I'll stick with my insurance, pay my copay, and see the doctors I want to see.

I see that as a lame excuse. If you have 1 million people with 500 people in charge of it, what would be the difference with 2 million people with 1000 people in charge or 10 million people with 5000 people in charge of the system. Same ratio.

I completely agree with you there. No doubt about it. IIRC, Viagra was developed for something like heart treatment, but the testers all got erections and the drug did not work for what it was designed to do.

At the same time, why should I be required to pay for the R&D when the same drug is sold elsewhere for pennies on the dollar. If I pill I take costs a buck each, why should those in Canada only pay a quarter, and those in Mexico pay a nickle? If we all paid the same, all costs would be even, the drug companies would recover costs sooner, and we would all benefit.

Lets compare healthcare system to healthcare system. Those that run from Cuba are not coming here for our health system.

As for the cost differences, I'll give you that. I did not care enough to check the currency differemces.

Why is death such a bad thing?

It isn't, but I prefer to live. I like looking at the sky at night. I like to hold my wife. I enjoy the sunshine, the clouds, the rain, snow, etc. I would like to enjoy that for as long as I can.

Can you put a price tag on your life? What is your life worth?

As for BMT's, how do you know that they do not do BMT's in Canada? Many other countries are just as advanced in medicine as we are and some places are more advanced.

People here want the best, but if you mess up, it'll cost you. I don't remember Michael Moore attacking ambulance chasers or the court system, which is a big reason of high health care costs.

I know ambulance chasing lawyers are scum. The sad part is, our system breeds those types of people. As long as insurance companies are making money, there are going to be people that are going to try to get some of it.

I'll stick with my insurance, pay my copay, and see the doctors I want to see.

Never forget what you have just said. My insurance companies, like many others give you a list of doctors they allow you to see. As a matter of fact, my insurance company even dictated what hospitals I could visit.

As I said, I am willing to bet companies in other countries reverse engineer the drugs and then start making them from stolen recipes. They are not paying the R&D costs that it initially costs to design a pill, so they can charge much lower prices and recover their own much lower costs.

As for BMT's, how do you know that they do not do BMT's in Canada?

I don't. But since all health care is free, why did they let that woman's husband die instead of taking him to Canada for a free BMT? I suspect it probably costs at least something there.

Can you put a price tag on your life? What is your life worth?

I have a rough estimate of what my life is worth. I'll keep it to myself, but as sad as it is, people can have different values to the world.

I guess we don't have the same insurance. My company writes me a referral and tells me to get fixed up. I have a genetic disorder that requires regular visits to the doctor and constant prescription medication. I don't think I've paid more than $10 at a time for a month's worth of meds.

So what you are saying is GSK, Pfizer, and all the other drug companies do not sell their products in other countries or those other countries knowingly support breaking international patent laws?

I don't. But since all health care is free, why did they let that woman's husband die instead of taking him to Canada for a free BMT? I suspect it probably costs at least something there.

Did you miss the part where that woman going to Canada for health care is lying and saying she is a Canadian Citizan? Health Care in Canada is not free. The Citizans of Canada pay for it in tax's. I, as an American, HAVE NO RIGHT TO GO TO CANADA TO GET FREE HEALTH CARE!

Would you be mad at your parents if you were a minor and they said, "hmmm, $15,000 for this surgery or he dies, No thanks. We are going to let him die"? $150,000, $1.5M, $3M

Could you envision telling that to your own child?

Hang on to it for as long as you can. Keep a jar of petroleum jelly. One day you are going to need to ease the pain of the insurance companies.

My mother-in-law had cancer. Liver Cancer to be exact. They came very close to reaching the maximum payout the insurance company would pay. Once you hit that poiunt, you have no insurance. Imagine if you hit that point tomorrow. For the rest of your life, you would have no insurance. You also could not get insurance because the industry black lists you.

It happens.

Dr Sanjay Gupta has seen the movie, and here are his comments:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JpKoN40K7mA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JpKoN40K7mA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Michael Moore then backed up his statements that Dr Sanjay Gupta said were false.

Interesting....

The sad part is that the media is owned by big corporations. You honestly do not think we get unbiased news do you?
