That is Very impressive. Far better than the other famed underground houses. Simply amazing--I am astonished.



...and under the thuggery of its government, the private property of the temples was seized, under threat of the government elsewise dynamiting the whole hillside, something equally amazing, yet I am not astonished.



I understand that Italy is in a ridiculous fiscal crisis, but stealing this impressive piece of privately-funded property is egregious.

The first time the police came it was over alleged tax evasion and still the temples lay undiscovered. But a year later the police swooped on the community demanding: "Show us these temples or we will dynamite the entire hillside."

Stunned by what they had found, the authorities decided to seize the temples on behalf of the government.

This is why we can't have nice things.
