Hi all.

I'm thinking I would like to take a short trip south in mid/late July. Just a week or so. Do we have members here who live in/near South Dakota that can give me some hints on what not to miss? I have a paticular interest in history. I will be hotelling.

Gerry

I am not interested in the Sturgis Bikerfest. I can get that here. ;)

If you get to Mr. Rushmore, you may want to also drive to Spearfish and drive through Spearfish Canyon on Highway 14A. Devils Tower is also just a short drive into Wyoming from Spearfish. It is all a pretty area.

Gerry Mac,

Just went through South Dakota on my cross-country road trip.

If you are going to Mt. Rushmore, stay in Deadwood. Be sure to visit Saloon # 10--this is where Wild Bill Hickok got shot. Judging from your avitar you are a LEO. They have some T-Shirts there your buddies will like. There are casinos in Deadwood and it is a real neat town.

From Deadwood take 385/16 drive to the Cazy Horse memorial. From there remain on 385/16 to Custer. In Custer take 16A East through Custer State Park to Iron Mountain Road. Take Iron Mountain Road into Mt. Rushmore. It is sceanic and by going this direction you drive through 2 one lane tunnels that will siloute Mt. Rushmore. If you go to Rushmore first the sculptures will be at your back. All this can be done in a day, but it will be a full day.

Either on your way there or back drive through the Badlands National Park. It won't take you that far out of your way and is well worth the drive.
