Spacer Installation - Cutting Studs?

I took my rear wheel off to install my 1 1/4" spacers and the stock studs stick out 1/4" beyond the spacer. The back of my wheel is flat in the area of the studs. I was under the impression that 1 1/4" spacers were thick enough to avoid having to cut the studs.



Did everyone that got 1 1/4" spacers need to cut their studs or do the stock wheels have space for the stud to protrude into?



I'm guessing I need to cut them, right?

My stock ST rims had dimples where the extra stuck through, I did not need to cut any thing..

I see you have aftermarket wheels, You either have to get 1.5" spacers, OR have your rims dimpled where the stock studs poke through....

You can cut the stock studs if you like... Just buy a steel nut that threads on, Thread it on then cut the stud, then back off the nut so the threads allow a new nut to go on....

MKW 18". Yeah, I figured it was something like a dimpled area on the stock rims...



The 1/4" protruding is untheaded so it should be no problem to cut it off, right?

Or would it be better to drill into the wheel?

Just don't mark it flush, cut slightly more off for expansion and contraction.

Does running these spacers (1 1/4 or 1 1/2) have any ill effects in the long term? I have a set of new aftermarket rims in my basement that will go on come spring. The more pics I see of the stance of the wheels/tires that are installed with spacers on the rear atleast, the more I am liking the look. Plus with the wheels I got and tires I plan to run I am thinking the extra space may be beneficial. Excessive axle wear? Braking issues? Anything at all?

If installed correctly You should have no ill effects as long as you bearings are up to snuff....

You are adding torque to the axles, But a wider tire does the same thing...



I would not worry if going 1.5" max...

I see, in that case would the combination of a much wider tire (305 or 12" wide) + 1 1/2" spacers be too much? I just went and looked at the new rims and there is no indention for the studs to poke out past the 1 1/4" spacers, so I would need the 1 1/2".
 
Cool thanks for the help guys! Stil not sure if I will end up with them or not. I will probably wait till I get the wheels installed to decide. Thanks though!
 
wouldn't it be easier to run to a local auto store and buy shorter studs??? that way if you want to change back you can put the origanal ones back in???

Nice idea, then again, if you are buying new studs, you might as well cut the old ones and buy new studs that are the correct length and keep them at home if you want to switch back.

Ever install studs???... What a PITA, especially since you have to yank rotors, drums, calipers and that crap to do it... Taking the centering nub of the front of the stud will not compromise any thing, and there is enough thread that you could even grind a new nub on...
